Last week I made a joke about how Jesus had given me a laptop, but it was an Acer running Vista. Gare got to making fun of me in ist and i was all like fuck off you moran, i don't even have a laptop bro. And Blake is such a number one asian that he fucking bought me one, in recognition of my service to the community. Or out of pity I guess. Anyway, a suspected mexican ups guy just got here with it. Some unboxing pics, review to follow. Thanks again, Blake. I don't care what everyone else says, you're alright in my book.

jeez! an HP? Nice Blake.

They had ones like my Lenovo G570 at Fry's Electronics literally for $239. I bought this for $299 a year ago. Cant believe they already dropped 20% from that price point, although there was a limit of 1 per customer.

also I solved my own laptop issue with some thought effort and ingenuity.

Wong out of curiosity are you going to keep vista or up/downgrade? I have an HP DV6500 running vista that I'm debating downgrading to xp or upgrading to windows 8 (the preview)

I tend to like XP a LOT, it's the only version of windows I do not despise (MY GOD VISTA IS HORRIBLE) just curious what your preference is for a less than stellar performing laptop in 2012.

also i have a laptop freebie to give away if anyone wants it, an old dell latitude d400. I reformatted with windows xp, it's actually not a bad machine but the processor is lol (like 500mhz) the RAM is lol and the screen is small/old. It's being thrown out with some other stuff if no one wants it. It has like this removable usb drive that you can swap out the floppy or dvd part which is kind of cool, but useless to me.

First impressions of this are pretty good. The construction is excellent and appears very durable. I saw some reviews calling this brushed aluminum, but i'm 95% sure that this is stainless steel. Whatever it is, most of the case is clad in a matte finish metal which is sturdy, cool to the touch, and resists fingerprints. It's reasonably slim and maybe a pound lighter than most similar laptops I've used. This is one of the more reasonably priced probooks so it's not going to set any speed records, but the i3 processor has easily handled what multi-tasking I've tried so far. The display looks great. The speakers are maybe a touch better than an average laptop, which still isn't great, but they are loud enough and sound ok. I would have preferred the various ports and plugs and card reader to be farther back instead of all on the front and front sides, but you can't have it all I guess. Blake was super nice to not only buy this for me but take the trouble to pick out a nice one. Thanks again bro!

get real bro i've never even seen vista in real life. this has windows 7 and i can upgrade to windows 8 for $15 when it comes out.

You can upgrade to Windows 8 for free now.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/iso/

You could be forgiven for thinking it's only free because it's a "Preview". But no. I literally bought multiple $150-$300 Windows 7 licenses (maybe half a dozen or a dozen, I'm not sure - because if the installation screws up 3 times, you have to sit on a phone with Microsoft for hours to get new codes - apparently, I cut the insanity after 90 minutes and bought new packs of licenses).

You can imagine my concern (if you are sane) when I discovered I was paying for the identical ISO available to anyone for 180 day renewable (unlimited) trials. Fully licensed Windows 7 ISOs, with Sha1 hash codes that matched with the ones I was paying $150 for. This seemed peculiar to me, on some level.

But I understand it all now. I wrote an essay about it titled "Thank you for Downloading" which I vaguely remember Harley x-posting on here. Probably no one read it.

In short, they'd give away laptops to you if you could afford to buy them. That's why they're so cheap. Why?

I know the answer why you're given things for free. On some level, assuming you're not too retarded to function yet, you know why you get given free things as well.

It's because you're entitled to them! Yes you are. Don't be modest. You're special. You're entitled. Accept the free gifts because it's not like you have a choice. You will be the beneficiary of Microsoft's and Linux's and Google's charity, or you can pay for your insulting exploitation with Apple, DELL or HP. It doesn't really matter.

You're going to be running an INTEL machine, no matter what. If you cannot understand how Power 'works' that is not something I can explain to retards who don't want to think for themselves.

ah gotcha. i put together a windows8 installer on usb, getting ready to give that a shot in a couple hours. windows 7 wasn't horrible, still a far cry from mac os though (GOD I MISS LION SO MUCH)

I wonder if I can install Lion onto this HP...Will look into that. Pretty sure I can...insanelymac has a thing on it. I fucking HATE windows.

I put Lion onto an HP. Couldn't get it onto a DELL.

Lion and Windows 7 simultaneously made a break from Leopard and XP across a host of very disturbing and hilariously non-interesting (to Toddlers) ways.

The changes were mostly due to settings and functionality and options. All the settings pretty much went to the worst possible defaults for users. Functionality to protect yourself was taken away across the board and your options were limited to "Like it, or Lump it." I chose to lump it. And lump it. And lump it. And then I ended up back at Square 1 when I realised what "options" really means.

Red or Blue, slaves? What's it gonna be?

Slaves think it matters. Some get really emotional about it. But then they pretty much all rule from the totalitarian centre so at some point, you gotta ask yourSelf why you want so badly to be exploited.

The answer is that you're lazy. You've been made to be this way. It's because when you're lazy, you become their slave. I know, it's counter-intuitive but then not really.

Your intuition is so messed up, it's funny. So much of human suffering is entirely the fault of those who suffer. You literally not even worthy of pity. Hah.

The funniest way Windows 7 and Lion simultaneously made a break from their predecessors was the way they became Server-Client Operating Systems. This made no sense to me when someone told me, because I didn't buy Windows Server 2008, I bought Windows 7. I did end up buying Windows Server 2008 to test it out and I can assure you that aside from being grey, it's got the same functionality as Windows 7. You just have to know how to turn the functionality Off in Windows 7.

That's not a misprint. You have to turn all the Server defaults Off. They come set to Off in Windows Server 2008. In Windows 7, they're all set to On. Peculiar no? Who knew that you needed to have Default functionality to remotely access your Registry from Cuba? I wasn't sure I'd ever need such a thing unless I was a hacker and unable to access someone's Console. Still pretty much hold the same opinion about all this bally-hoo'd Remote Access Functionality. But don't kid yourself because I'm not fibbing. Your Windows 7 OS is a Server with all the Server functionality and exploits switched on by Default half an hour before Windows 7 insults you with the message as you boot into your Desktop for the first time.

Go buy some AntiVirus software. Windows 7 will warn you that you need it. You don't want to make that mistake twice, if you've just bought the OS when you didn't need to.

I tried to ask about why my Lion OS was a surreptitious Server. I can't be fucked finding the image where Apple deleted my post and sent me the warning referring to their Terms and Conditions. "Discussion about Apple policies is against the rules."

Hah. What do you imbeciles care?

Seamless boot, every time

By leveraging the capabilities of UEFI and working together with the ecosystem, our goal is for the PC to power up to the manufacturer’s logo and stay on that screen all the way from POST to Windows logon UI. The logo should be beautiful and reflect the brand you trust when you purchased your PC. In effect, we are bridging two experiences (firmware + operating system) to deliver one experience, as you see here:

Stare. Drool. Experience.

None of that pesky information to bother you about how little you realise you're getting raped. Just get raped whilst you drool. It's the new User Experience.

Microsoft ADVERTISES this as a Feature...!

You cannot even be pitied when you scream in agony. Let's face facts now.

You've literally demanded to be exploited. It's what you wanted and now you got it. Now kindly shut the fuck up with your endless screaming in pain, would you?

As an aside (not to derail the thread too much) Scuter has a point about anti-virus garbage- they're worthless and probably more dangerous to your privacy/security than any actual virus you might encounter in the wild.

Personally- in all the years I have had computers, not ONCE has ANY anti-virus anything found one single infection. It seems like if you have an actual infection you probably need to do one thing- REFORMAT. Nuke the site from orbit and start over, it's the only way to be sure.

I got my laptop here and the first thing I did was reinstall vista (PUKE) and then I spent (not kidding) over an hour uninstalling norton symantec something something (this literally sped the laptop up over 30% on it's own ) and a ton of disgusting bloatware and now i have what I wanted- a bare-bones install of vista (and it's running quite nicely really)

Do I plan to run anti-virus software? Maybe MSE, since it's free, but that's literally it. If I encounter anything looking at porn, I'll just reformat. Simple. It's 2012, if you can't backup important files and reformat in an hour or two, you've got some fucking problems with computer proficiency IMO. Just by not using an administrator account day to day and avoiding simple mistakes like clicking shit you shouldn't is more than enough, if anything worse comes along start from scratch.

Some credit goes to Tine for my perspective but also my nasa buddy has been harping for ~4 years now to not bother with anti-virus mumbo jumbo, if you get an infection reformat and quit worrying. He also said probably 7 years ago now that virus writers work for anti-virus companies and I absolutely believe him. No virus has ever made my computers run worse over the years than the bullshit anti-virus programs hawked to the masses to fix them.

As an aside (not to derail the thread too much) Scuter has a point about anti-virus garbage- they're worthless and probably more dangerous to your privacy/security than any actual virus you might encounter in the wild.

This is kind of common sense. Life is almost an endless string of Protection Rackets. Humans just aren't really bright enough to connect dots to dots.

You don't want to give someone an incentive to invoice you. I made that mistake a lot last year.

I must have paid every A/V company in the industry before working out that, whilst they might not have all been out-and-out corrupt, they were all lying to my face. Kaspersky is one of the worst.

The Logic is really kind of simple. Whose benefit does the writing of malware serve? Who is profitting from it?

The antivirus companies will have you believe it's Russian teenagers sitting in their Mom's basement playing WoW and shit, who get their kicks from fucking with you. But the A/V industry is a multi-billion dollar affair, which would not exist if viruses were not written. If it is the Russian teenager anarchists, it sure is very nice of them to make huge companies very wealthy, isn't it?

http://f.cl.ly/items/061z430E0x2n3n0E2w0f/Comodo%20GeekBuddy.png

All these companies are just fucking liars. If they're prepared to lie so brazenly "We can fix any computer problem" when they cannot even answer a single question, what else are they prepared to lie about?

Google "Comodo Certificate Scandal", for one example.

http://cl.ly/HqZs/eset%20scandal.png

ESET doesn't know which customer they're speaking to. Never responded.

http://f.cl.ly/items/2D23031J0D1t180M190B/IMAG0383.jpg

I'm not really sure what this bs is but after I zero-filled a drive, I booted with a Kaspersky licensed disc and this was showing. Hidden files in my RAM? I said to Kaspersky, "That's not what I want, is it?"

Kaspersky wasn't sure, it would seem. Guess my four Kaspersky licenses weren't enough for them to get a clue. They just keep asking for more and more information. I mean, at what stage does it get ridiculous?

Answer: Long before I stopped being ridiculous.

He also said probably 7 years ago now that virus writers work for anti-virus companies and I absolutely believe him. No virus has ever made my computers run worse over the years than the bullshit anti-virus programs hawked to the masses to fix them.

It's kind of common sense.

Doesn't come via Hotfix, does it?

This is for the E6500 Notebook Series (Vista 64x).

For good apps that alert you to the extent of the dirty shit rumbling under the abstraction layer of your OS, Windows SysInternals (bought by Microsoft) is pretty good.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb545027.aspx

The best ones are Autoruns, and I'm guessing because these weren't released but they're going to be pretty important, Handle, Portmon, PsKill. Those last 3 weren't available until after I stopped being able to even get an OS booted up long enough to consider investigating.

This guy's got really fucking good utilities but I haven't used them all because the problem with good utilities and my machines was that I could not BEAT them. But with good utilities I sure did kill their corruption a lot, i.e. Windows Cannot Repair This System.

http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/

To check the firmware, the only test I know of is the Intel Linux Firmware test included in the OpenSuSe or Novell distributions.

http://i.imgur.com/siwS5l.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/GfqNDl.jpg

If you're using Vista or 7, it's all going to be about your Hidden NPnP & Networking devices. Watch out for the ghosted ones, I forgot the code for the system variable you have to adjust for them to show (no, they won't show when you click Show Hidden) - there are many levels of insulting defence-in-depth to Windows.

One of the best System Information Tools is SIW. There's a 15 day trial download and a Home version which is the old version I think, for free.
