For nearly seven hours early Saturday, a man used an ice pick to take a nine-year-old boy hostage in Quezon City – until the young hostage's mother came to the rescue.

The mother took advantage of a lull to hold the hostage-taker's arms to allow police to subdue him, radio dzBB's Glen Juego reported.

She initially declined to speak to media after the incident, however.

For several hours, tension gripped the neighborhood along E. Rodriguez Avenue after the man, initially identified as Ramir Parparan, took the boy hostage.

Parparan had walked all the way from Cavite to Quezon City before the incident, radio dzBB's Roland Bola reported.

He allegedly took the boy hostage after arriving at his relatives' house shortly after midnight Friday but his kin refused to let him in.

A crowd gathered to watch the drama unfold, but police cleared the area after Parparan indicated he did not want to see bystanders.

He also asked for a taxi driven by a policeman – a request the police granted – but decided at the last minute not to board it.

But when Parparan briefly let down his guard and put down the ice pick, the boy's mother seized the moment and held his arms tight.

This allowed Quezon City Police District martial arts experts to subdue Parparan.
