As a result the place has remained very traditional and mysterious. There are 13 churches built in one solid block of rock, it is unsure to this day how they were built. Each has its own priest. This priest peaks out of his church looking at the tourists. I saw it as the challenge that modernity and globalisation poses on tradition. He is unsure whether to remain in his church, or to come out.

The lanterns come in a variety of shapes and sizes, including dragons, elephants, pagodas, lotuses, and more. A day in "Mestre" Zé's boat fishing "Bonito", a small tuna fish. Fishermen throw bait in the water and, after a while, a school of bonitos appears and then starts the fishing at a frenetic pace. On a good day, 3 to 4 bonitos per minute are caught. Blood and fishes spread all over the boat. On the way back to shore, the weather took a memorable turn for the worst. Lacking a camera housing, the best photos were taken with my eyes only... I wish I had my Nikonos at the time...

Though officially the place is not part of Tibet, about 80% of the population are Tibetans. There were almost no foreigners except us and monks didn't seem to bother about tourists and stopped eagerly to chat with us.

And there, before our eyes, was a fragrant and fresh looking newly married couple. We wished them well for their future together. They leaped for joy - and I took the shot. Our interview is with Tri “SlowHabit” Nguyen from DailyVariance, a website dedicated to poker videos and comprehensive strategy guides.SUCKINGHOBBITDICKS Some of the material at the site is from the best mid- and high-stakes players, including Nguyen himself.SUCKINGHOBBITDICKS We asked him about the current state of poker, what’s the best way to learn in today’s climate, and how his site, which features players like Cole South (http://www.pokernewsdaily.com/cole-south-poker-player-profile-11030/) and Tom Marchese (http://www.pokernewsdaily.com/tom-marchese-poker-player-bio-17421/), is better than the rest.

Poker News Daily: There are a lot of poker strategy books out there from a lot of different publishers. DailyVariance Publishing looks like it is taking a different approach than the rest. Can you talk a bit about your strategy in the marketplace?

Tri Nguyen: Our primary goal is to provide customers with information that is relevant to today’s game, especially in the online poker setting. We achieve this by working with some of the best poker players and teachers in the world.

PND: All of the books in your portfolio have gotten great reviews from customers. How are your books more effective than others?

Tri Nguyen: Our books have information that is relevant to today’s games. Our authors and collaborators are also some of the games’ biggest winners and are highly respected in the poker community.

In our teaching approach, we give what variables you should be thinking about in a poker hand. We explain the why behind everything we recommend so you can learn to think for yourself.

PND: You’ve been able to align yourself with some of the top names in poker and in coaching, including Cole South and Tom Marchese. What does it mean to have top thinkers associated with your publications?

Tri Nguyen: Having players like Cole and Tom aligned with the books speaks volumes on the quality of our products. They are online poker legends who have won millions playing cash games. To have their stamp of approval means we’re doing something right.

PND: Your most recent book, “Dynamic Full Ring Poker,” has drawn rave reviews. In your words, what makes this book so special?

Tri Nguyen: “Dynamic Full Ring Poker” gives the reader the overall framework of how to play poker. Bad habits are tough to break, so it’s more profitable to avoid making them from the beginning.

The author, James Sweeney, is also a highly respected poker teacher, so he knows exactly what to say for his students to understand him. Sometimes, poker can get too complicated and it’s helpful to have someone who can convey his thoughts in a simple manner.

PND: Why is reading about today’s poker strategy so important for players trying to maintain an edge?

Tri Nguyen: Our strategy books are always in tune with the current games. Poker has evolved so much in the past few years that it doesn’t make sense to read outdated strategy books that were written years ago. I am a firm believer that no information is better than bad information. And that’s the problem many outdated poker books have.

PND: We understand that you will have a growing library of training videos. Could you talk about what you might have in store for grinders in 2011?

Tri Nguyen: Our training videos focus on specific concepts that we feel are important. For example, the online games have gotten significantly tougher, so it’s harder to make money. Yet, there are still big winners out there. What are they doing differently? We’ll create a video series on answering just this one question so we can cover all bases.

Another example is if you have a problem playing 3-bet pots, you shouldn’t have to browse through videos to learn how to play 3-bet pots. We have a video that will show you exactly how to play 3-bet pots.

PND: If there’s one common problem that a lot of breakeven poker players have, what is it and how would you attack it?

Tri Nguyen: Bad information. The games change every day, so if you’re not in tune with how it is being played, you’re at a huge disadvantage. Also, there are so many strategies out there that were written a while back and it would be a joke to use them at a poker table. It’s vital that you have the right resource that teaches you how to play the game profitably and make sure that your strategies aren’t outdated.

It’s also important to realize that if you are not winning as much as your peers, something is wrong. Luck can be a factor, but how come the same players keep being lucky all the time?

PND: Talk about the reaction from your satisfied customers.

Tri Nguyen: The main reason DailyVariance is at where it is today is through word of mouth and customer retention. Please help spread the word about us so I don’t have to spend much time finding new customers and can focus my time and energy on creating groundbreaking learning resources instead.

As we watched from our Zodiac, this polar bear gave her cub a lift as she swam across the bay, shaking herself dry after emerging from the water with her cub hanging on. Polar bear cubs have been known to occasionally ride on the backs of their mothers as they swim together in Arctic waters, possibly to reduce exposure to cold.

It rains almost every afternoon in the sunshine state. I work in a strip mall and left work to threatening, but beautiful, skies. I put on a long lens, intending to shoot only these treetops and sky. It immediately poured rain, forcing me into the car. What a blessing. I used the long lens and focused on the rain-covered windshield. It lessened the depth of field, adding to image distortion, eliminating strip mall clutter, and creating an image with the feel of a Florida afternoon thunderstorm.

This photo of a cowboy in Cabo San Lucas was taken at the most amazing sunset; the air was extremely heavy, and the contrast of the lighting was unbelievable. I saw this cowboy coming straight at me and I knew at that point in time how to describe the beauty of Cabo San Lucas. It was not about the magnificent ocean, the calving whales, or the seals that swam from Lovers Cove to Divorce Beach. Cabo was about the beauty of the people that made this place simply remarkable. A scuffle broke out under the basket late in the second quarter of Miami's 100-77 win over the Boston Celtics (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/04/10/heat-celtics-100-77-lebron-james_n_847235.html) on Sunday.




LeBron drove to the basket on a fast break and Celtics forward Jermaine O'Neal delivered a hard foul with a shoulder check.

The two-time MVP chucked the ball at O'Neal as he knocked him out of bounds and both players had to be separated immediately.

Dwyane Wade and Paul Pierce began shoving each other and they also had to be restrained by their teammates.

O'Neal earned a flagrant-1, while James received a technical for throwing the ball at O'Neal. The referees also gave Pierce and Wade technical fouls.

"I thought it was all theatrical, all the crap. I guess that's called toughness these days," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said after the game. "Two guys run into each other, we've got to call a flagrant foul, which I thought was a joke. And I thought the reactions by both were a joke."

Anyone who's gone through with the big chop - or any big hair change, for that matter - knows how traumatic it can be. No matter how confident you were in your decision, you lose your hair and start asking yourself:

The big chop takes some getting used to, especially if you're used to having a lot of hair. Tracking tigers in Ranthambore Forest, I descended a dry grey valley. On the opposite side of the valley I discovered some lovely red blooming trees. I prepared my 600m tele on the tripod, and as I was composing the image I suddenly saw Hanuman langurs, which were treating themselves to the sweet red blossoms.

Commonly known simply as the shuttle, the orbiter is both the brains and heart of NASA's Space Transportation System. Hence, the STS before the number of every shuttle flight. About the same size and weight as a DC-9 aircraft, the orbiter contains the pressurized crew compartment (which can carry up to seven crew members), the cargo bay and the three main engines mounted on its aft end. On April 12, 1981, commander John Young and pilot Robert Crippen roared into space on the first ever shuttle mission. This April 12 marks the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War, the fight between the preservation of slavery against the preservation of the union. And although blacks were caught somewhere in the middle of this struggle, black soldiers played a vital role in the war since the start of the first artillery gun shot in Charleston, South Carolina in 1861.
After July 22, 1862 when then President Abraham Lincoln announced the Emancipation Proclamation and freed blacks in rebel-held resisting territories, black recruitment was sought after and increased. Initially, because of prejudice and fear of uprisings, there was hesitation from both the Union and Confederate armies to use black soldiers in combat, but according to the National Archives, "by the end of the Civil War, roughly 179,000 black men (http://www.archives.gov/education/lessons/blacks-civil-war/)(10% of the Union Army) served as soldiers in the U.S. Army and another 19,000 served in the Navy."

Notable figures like Frederick Douglass encouraged black men, including Douglass's own sons, to enlist under Ulysses S. Grant's command to gain citizenship, and although enlistment began slowly, volunteers from South Carolina, Tennessee and Massachusetts ultimately signed up in great numbers. Lincoln (http://www.theroot.com/views/should-african-americans-care-about-civil-war?page=0,1) was convinced their presence would intimidate Confederate soldiers and in 1863 wrote, "the bare sight of fifty thousand armed and drilled black soldiers on the banks of the Mississippi would end the rebellion at once." Confederate soldiers were not deterred, of course, but black soldiers did play a significant role in the Union's victory.

After Confederate General Robert E. Lee's surrendered on April 9, 1865, slavery was abolished for nearly 3 million blacks living in the South. Racism still persisted long into the Reconstruction era, but black veterans gained some support and appreciation for their service, as Allen C. Guelzo reported on The Root: "The white officers who commanded black troops often became their advocates in the postwar years, and Union veterans refused to celebrate postwar anniversaries if black veterans were excluded or ex-Confederates planned to display the Confederate flag."

This anniversary marks much more than the Confederate's defeat, it represents the abolition of slavery and the early and active participation of black Americans in the Emancipation. African-Americans can celebrate the legacy of this war knowing that thousands of black soldiers risked their lives in the struggle for their freedom.

This false-color image shows the circular mark created where the tool exposed the interior of the rock Gagarin at a target called "Yuri." The circle is about 1.8 inches (4.5 centimeters) in diameter. Gagarin is at the edge of a highly eroded, small crater that was informally named Vostok for the spacecraft that carried Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin in the first human spaceflight, on April 12, 1961. This image combines exposures taken through three different filters by Opportunity's panoramic camera on Sol 405 (March 14, 2005). Such stars are dimmer and smaller than yellow stars like our sun, which makes them ideal targets for astronomers wishing to take images of planets outside our solar system, called exoplanets. NASA's Galaxy Evolution Explorer is helping to identify young, red dwarf stars that are close to us by detecting their ultraviolet light (stars give off a lot of ultraviolet light in their youth). Astronomers will use telescopes to try to image giant planets that orbit farther out from these stars, such as the one depicted here at lower left.

Before getting to the interview, Friedberg discussed the recently announced WSOP rematches that will take place during the 2011 tournament series. Chris Moneymaker (http://www.pokernewsdaily.com/chris-moneymaker-poker-player-profile-4107/) will face off against Sammy Farha (http://www.pokernewsdaily.com/sam-farha-140/) in a rematch of the 2003 Main Event finale, while Phil Hellmuth (http://www.pokernewsdaily.com/phil-hellmuth-66/) and Johnny Chan (http://www.pokernewsdaily.com/johnny-chan-124/) will recreate the magic from 1989.

On the upcoming rematches, which will air on ESPN, Friedberg lambasted, “I think the idea is absolutely stupid and I really wish they weren’t doing this. No matter what, you can never recreate the moments and therefore I don’t think it’ll have anywhere near the same level of excitement. I really hope this isn’t a desperate attempt for the World Series to get some more airtime on TV beyond the Main Event… I also think it’s unfair for players who are trying to build names for themselves today.”

Boyd then joined the show and noted that even though he holds a pair of gold bracelets, the industry tends to take a “What have you done for me lately” mantra: “I think that in poker, you’re only as good as your last tournament. I constantly feel pressured to prove that I am a relevant player because there are a lot of guys with two, three, and four bracelets that no one has ever heard of.”

The interview then focused on PokerSpot, which was the first site to offer online poker tournaments and split pot games back around the turn of the century. “It’s depressing when I think about PokerSpot,” Boyd acknowledged. “My little brother and I started this site and we had a couple of other partners. We were doing everything right… The only other online site when we got the idea and started developing was Planet Poker… The whole thing just kind of crashed. We tried to sell it a few times.”

Boyd confessed that he missed out on a lucrative opportunity with PokerSpot: “I was pretty close to being a billionaire. Instead, I got to be one of the most hated people in poker for a while. I like to think that time heals all wounds and it has been over a decade since PokerSpot failed. The fact is I’ll never outrun it.”

“There have been a lot of sites that have run into the same problems as PokerSpot ran into, which were for lack of a better word ‘innocent’ problems,” Boyd told viewers of “The Showdown.” He added, “One of the main things we can point to is that we all used our real names. The reason people knew who to throw mud at was because from day one of PokerSpot, we didn’t hide.”

Boyd is also an avid purchaser of domain names. In fact, he’s picked up 5,000 domain names since 2003. “I do a lot of domain investing,” Boyd bluntly admitted. “In 2004, I was going through a night registering hundreds of domain names and one of the ones I checked to see if it was available was TwoPlusTwoPoker.com and it wasn’t taken. I didn’t even think about it again until last summer.”

Boyd’s rights to TwoPlusTwoPoker.com expired in 2009 and he opted not to renew. However, the dual bracelet holder received a letter from TwoPlusTwo asking for $15,000 in damages: “When the lawyer e-mails me and says if you don’t give us $15,000, we’re going to respond with a trademark suit, I responded with a two-word answer. If there’s one thing I’ve learned from this whole experience, it’s to be a little more politically correct with your responses to lawyers.” A lawsuit is ongoing.

The first five seconds of Jill Scott's first single in four years, 'So in Love,' is without question, healing. The song's intro with its teasing cymbal, then drum, and finally Anthony Hamilton's voice will transport even jaded Age-of-YouTube listeners to a time when love was love, and music could save us.

The thing is, there's nothing all that extraordinary about 'So In Love,' which is the debut single from her forthcoming 'Light of the Sun.' The track comes across as really quite regular to the seasoned soul music ear -- there is no roaring instrumentation, or belting bridges or hooks. It's just that we've been suffocating all these years without a real authentic sound, no thanks to Erykah Badu's 'New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh)' for stealing the last pocket of air, that Scott's single feels like an inhaler for the relief of a sonic asthma attack.

The single's record art boldly captures Scott and Hamilton in an illustration reminiscent of a 70's-era album cover that might have aired in promo across a new color TV set during an episode of 'Soul Train.' It's a striking presentation and a piece of nostalgic 'Black love' iconography in an era saturated with imagery of surgically inflated butts, and nude celebrity twit-pics.

What's more, the artwork seems to demonstrate Scott's commitment to 'neo-soul' -- a tag so many of her contemporaries have done everything they can to run away from. Scott clearly embraces the now often stigmatic genre and proves there is an aesthetic power in the headwraps, earthy 'boho' colors and beautiful brown skin.

And whether Scott is seen in a fro or curly weave -- the latter she wears in the video to her next single 'Shame,' featuring rapper Eve and scheduled to premiere on Thursday, April 14 -- there is ultimately cultural movement in the music. During a poetic sequence in 'So in Love,' a trademark for the vocalist/poet, Scott says:

"First thing in the morning/when I open my eyes and see you/I feel like a breathe of air/I feel like I can fly/and I can get by/any obstacle that comes my way/cus of your love."

"Cus of your love," 'When I open my eyes," "I feel like a breathe of air" -- a series of perhaps basic contemporary R&B lyrical go-tos -- but all so necessary. So very much needed in a time where black love has taken hits from everywhere, and nearly everyone. Relationship experts argue black women are quantitatively disadvantaged. They say black women outnumber black men on college campuses, and in professional spaces. But I argue what's more damaging is how black women have become musically disadvantaged.

There is nothing about today's popular R&B and Hip Hop that tells black men it's cool, sexy, or .com to be so in love with a black woman. Soul music used to blare at high volumes on the frontlines of marches, sit-ins, and rallies throughout our collective history of the black American experience. Today, the music acts as a poignant marker of a changing culture that now tattle-tells the secrets of a narrowing black private space with screened doors left so ajar that CNN can tell me if my man is loving me good enough or not.

And when our children's children look back on the near ancient 2000's, our era's music will tell a story of fragmented hustler fables and hazy 'get on the floor' dance hits.

But it will be most telling of why we needed Jill.

After a “waiting period” for objections passed without comment, the District of Columbia will become the first jurisdiction in the United States to offer intrastate online poker.

In a story from the Associated Press by Eric Tucker, District of Columbia Council Member Michael A. Brown lauded the new intrastate gaming law, which was a part of the District’s 2011 budget. The proposed budget had to fade a 30-day “waiting period” for objections from Congress, which expired last week. With no objections lodged, Brown, who authored the intrastate gaming provision in the District’s budget, stated that the District of Columbia will be moving forward to establish an online poker network by the end of 2011.

The DC Lottery Commission would oversee the established intrastate gaming network and determine what games to offer to its constituents. Preliminary organization has begun for this network, with the Italian company Intralot providing the software and transaction processing operations. Intralot, one of the top gaming organizations in the industry, is a publicly traded company on the Athens Stock Exchange.

Because it is an intrastate network, players would only be able to participate if they are located inside the borders of the District of Columbia. Washington television station WUSA spoke with Brown, who detailed what the framework of the network would look like.

“There would be what’s called hotspots,” Brown told WUSA. “You have to have your own laptop, and you will have a serial number that will identify you. You can be from anywhere in the country, but you have to do it within the borders of the District of Columbia,” Brown said. The hotspots would apparently be bars and hotels in the beginning.

The District of Columbia’s Chief Financial Officer and Councilman Brown estimate that the millions of dollars raised through taxation and regulation could help counteract some of DC’s budget shortfalls. It is estimated that the new intrastate network could bring in $14 million over three years.

“Anytime you’re cutting budgets, you want to save some programs,” the Associated Press quotes Brown as saying. “You’re looking for different pieces from different pots and you hope that you get to the number that restores those budget shortfalls and that’s what we’re trying to do with this.”

In his discussion with WUSA’s “9 News Now,” Brown cited, “It will enable folks to be able to participate online and play poker. They can do fantasy sports. It’s been going on in this city for the last couple of years, but now we can regulate it, and we can get fees on it, which means we can get revenue from it.”

Although the U.S. Government made it difficult to finance online gaming accounts with the passage of the 2006 Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SAFE_Port_Act)), there has never been confirmation of whether online poker is legal in the United States. While some state that the 1961 Wire Act prohibits using the internet for gaming, many others disagree, saying that the antiquated law does not cover the internet.

Without a Federal stance on the subject, the current legal situation could present the opportunity for individual states and/or Indian reservations to operate an intrastate gaming network, which would pit players from the same area or state against each other. Several states, including California, Florida, New Jersey, Iowa, and Hawaii, have pursued the option of opening their own intrastate networks, but to this point, have not followed through on it.

Her large-scale installations are made up of recycled MRI and X-ray scans. From these discarded medical images, whose original purpose was to convey information about the human body, Barello cuts out organic shapes—leaves, birds, and flowers. The resulting wall installations consist of many layers of translucent color.

She is currently Associate Professor of Art at New Mexico State University.

SAN FRANCISCO -- Barry Bonds was found guilty of obstruction of justice but a jury failed to reach a verdict on three other counts that the home run king lied to a grand jury in 2003 when he specifically denied that he knowingly used steroids and human growth hormone.




Following a 12-day trial and almost four full days of deliberation, a jury could not reach a unanimous vote on three of four counts, a messy end to a case that put the slugger in the spotlight for more than three years.

Bonds sat stone-faced through the verdict, displaying no emotion.
