SALEM, Ore. —
A Salem teenager fought off a home invasion suspect, who deputies believe was high on bath salts, with a case of beer and a power tool Wednesday night at his family's home.
Marion County sheriff's deputies were called to the home in the 3700 block of State Street SE around 6 p.m. When deputies arrived, they found the homeowner and his son trying to restrain the suspect, identified as 25-year-old Mario Vega-Navarro.
Deputies wrestled with the suspect for a short period of time until he was placed in handcuffs.
Jesus Ceja, 14, says Vega-Navarro entered his home an hour earlier around 5 p.m. He told KATU News the suspect was apparently looking for his aunt and uncle. Ceja's father told him he had the wrong house and asked the man to leave. An hour later, Vega-Navarro returned. Ceja says the suspect broke in through the downstairs door and tried to steal a pair of shoes.
Ceja says his father confronted the man and asked him to leave, again.
"My dad gave him several warnings that he could leave without any problems and stuff," Ceja told KATU's Chris Liedle. "As soon as that happened, he started getting mad, clinched his fists and hit my dad."
Ceja says his father tackled the suspect and yelled for help.
"After that, like I just looked to my right, I see the beers and I see this," Ceja said raising the power grinder in his hand. "I just grabbed the beer packs and start smashing them on his head ... I grabbed this, and went bang, bang, bang."
Ceja said he struck Vega-Navarro several times with the power tool. He said the suspect continued to make threats and gouged his father's eyes.
"He was like, 'I'm going to kill you guys!' I'm like, I'm not going to let this guy do anything," the 14-year-old said. "He had crazy eyes!"
According to deputies, the suspect tried to chew off the homeowner and his son's fingers. Ceja showed us the bite marks during our interview Thursday afternoon.
"Just once on the hand," Ceja said. "He was trying to bite off my fingers!"
Deputies say the suspect's behavior was consistent with someone under the influence of bath salts, a powerful, mind-altering illegal drug. Deputies say he had to be sedated before he was taken to the hospital.
Vega-Navarro is being treated at Salem Hospital and under police watch. He is charged with burglary, assault and resisting arrest.
Deputies say the Ceja family will not face criminal charges because they acted in self-defense.
"Now I carry a bat in my room," Ceja said laughing. "Just in case!"

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) -- Investigators say sparks from a grinder ignited a house fire at 42nd and Crown Point Avenue early Friday morning.
Authorities say the accidental blaze happened as a man was working in his machine shop. Sparks from the grinder set a shed on fire.
There were initial reports of ammunition being stored in the shed.
The fire was declared under control a half-hour later.
No one was hurt but the two people who live at the home had to find somewhere else to stay because the utilities were cut off.

Ilford firefighters use grinder on man’s privates after he got sex aid stuck
A man had to be treated by firefighters after a metal ring became stuck around his penis.
It had become too tight due to blood pumping to his nether regions.
The unidentified male went to King George Hospital, in Barley Lane, where paramedics tried to remove the ring manually, but their attempts failed.
Hospital staff called Ilford fire station just before 2am this morning, in order to help the male out.
A firefighter said: “The men had to go into the surgery room in order to help, so had to scrub up.”
The firefighters were forced to remove the offending chunk of jewellery with an electric pedal grinder, thankfully, the operation was carried out safely.

Gardaí are searching for two young offenders who escaped from Oberstown detention centre after assaulting three staff members, including the campus director.
The breakout occurred shortly after 9pm on Monday after two youths managed to cut through a fence with an angle grinder. It is the latest high-profile incident to occur at the youth detention centre and happened on the same day campus management launched a report advising on changes within the facility.
Among those injured in Monday night's incident were campus director Pat Bergin, who only hours before spoke at an event called 'Oberstown, Bringing in the Future'.
Mr Bergin received lacerations to his face and required a number of stitches following the incident.
The escape began shortly after 9pm when three youths assaulted a member of staff before taking his swipe card, which is needed to gain access to restricted areas on the campus grounds.
The teenagers then made their way to a maintenance lock-up where they retrieved a sledge hammer and an angle grinder.
Unit 9 of the campus, where the breakout began, was also damaged during a stand-off as staff attempted to negotiate with the teenagers.
Two of the youths then managed to cut through a fence surrounding the complex with the angle grinder, cutting a hole in the fence before making their escape.
Injuries
A spokesman for Oberstown declined to comment on the injuries incurred to members of staff.
"Gardaí were notified and are investigating. The local community has been alerted. As this is a live investigation, we are unable to share further detail," an Oberstown spokesman said.
Due to the extensive damage caused to Unit 9, it has been temporarily closed down with the remaining occupants moved to other units.
It has also emerged that two detainees attempted to escape from Oberstown on Sunday night but were intercepted by staff.
The inmates from Unit 5 attempted an escape while accompanied by workers across the campus. They caused damage to windows and doors with steel bars they managed to acquire.
However, this incident was brought under control after staff bravely intervened.
Commenting on Monday night's escape, Children's Minister Katherine Zappone said: "There were three young people who took over a staff office. The staff came immediately and were negotiating with them.
"They managed to get out of the office and they absconded. They left the campus. While they were negotiating with the young people, the gardaí were called. One has been caught. Two are still missing. That is upsetting and disappointing."
The minister referred to a fire at the campus last year and said a series of "positive changes" had taken place since then as a result of a security review and the implementation of its recommendations. "Incidents such as [Monday] night have gone down considerably. Unfortunately it happened," she said.
On Monday afternoon, just hours before the serious incident, a report was launched by Oberstown management.
The review group made 13 planning recommendations relating to fences and doors which they hope will prevent future incidents and escapes. These proposed implementations include raising the height of certain fences, fitting more robust doors in bedrooms and increasing the thickness of existing windows.

Maleny Dairies fined $130k over workplace death
A HORRIFIC workplace accident cost a Coast man his life, a wife her husband, his adult children their father, and now a local company hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Edward "Ted” Gavey was killed at work at Maleny Dairies on February 4, 2016, - weeks before his 60th birthday - when the blade on an angle grinder he was using shattered and a shard pierced his chest and heart.
Today the company that runs Maleny Dairies, Ross Hopper.com Pty Ltd, was fined $135,000 for failing to comply with its health and safety duty.
The company's sole director, Ross Hopper, was also ordered to conduct a workplace audit.
Prosecutor V McKenzie said Mr Gavey and two other staff members had been trying to unbolt a fan from a motor, and when a number of methods failed to remove the bolts, Mr Gavey tried to cut them off with an angle grinder.
"At the time he was using an unguarded nine-inch grinder and it had attached to it an incompatible abrasive cutting disc,” she said.
Magistrate Annette Hennessy said the company should have had processes in place to regularly check power tools were safe.

Man quizzed after grisly body parts find
By Robin Schiller
June 14 2017
Police in the Irish Republic are questioning a Dublin man in his 30s after a woman was murdered and dismembered, before her body parts were scattered around the Wicklow mountains.
The murder suspect was arrested in Co Wexford yesterday evening as gardai recovered more body parts belonging to the victim, including her head and arms in a plastic bag.
Investigators have also identified the murdered woman, and are in the process of informing her next of kin.
It is understood that the man arrested was well known to the murdered woman.
The barbaric killing is not being linked to organised criminality.
Detectives believe that the victim was cut up with power tools, possibly an angle grinder, before her remains were scattered.
It is believed that the body parts were erratically scattered from a vehicle driving along the Wicklow mountains, as no effort was made to conceal the remains.

Two police officers who prevented a man from harming himself and others have been nominated for a top police bravery award.
PC James Moore and PC Carl Stoppard will be among the winners at the 22nd Police Bravery Awards, which are being held next month in London.
In November 2014, five minutes before the end of their shift, the two officers were sent to an incident at a property in Wisbech.
A man doused in petrol was using a hand angle grinder to try to break into a house with his terrified partner and daughter inside.
PCs Moore and Stoppard made their way to a porch area where they noticed the floor was wet, slippery and covered in petrol. They saw the hand angle grinder with its blade still spinning and ready to use.
The officers located the suspect who had a lighter in a firm grip in his right hand and appeared ready to ignite it.
The officers were aware that Taser was not an option and instead distracted the man and swiftly grabbed his wrists and hands to be able to control him and get the lighter away. He was then restrained using two pairs of handcuffs.
As other officers arrived, PCs Moore and Stoppard searched the garden and found a green plastic fuel container on fire which was only 6ft away from the house and close to a stack of tyres and a wooden fence.
They moved the container away from the house and extinguished the fire using a garden hose.
Liz Groom, chair of the Cambridgeshire Police Federation, said: “PCs Moore and Stoppard conducted themselves with the utmost bravery and professionalism.
“Throughout the incident they were aware that even the smallest spark could have ignited the entire house and endangered lives.”
Stephen Mann, CEO of awards sponsors Police Mutual, said: “I am always astounded by police officers’ acts of bravery and my colleagues and I continue to be inspired by their dedication. They are a true inspiration and I feel privileged and humbled to be part of the Awards again.”
A man was arrested for arson with intent but eventually charged with a public order offence and later given a 12-month community order and supervision and restraining order against the victims.

Heist mob set off Post Office alarm to distract gardai as they robbed ATM
An organised heist mob made off with €63,000 in cash after they raided an ATM machine in Edenderry, Co Offaly.
The gang, believed to be Eastern European, posed as road workers hours before the robbery, using traffic cones with ‘Road Flooded’ as cover.
The thieves then brought in their tools, including an angle grinder, to remove the cash machine.
According to reports gardai believe that the gang set off the alarm at Clonbullogue Post Office in Tullamore over 30km away in order to create a diversion.
The raiders were unable to remove the ATM, but they did get it open and made off with €63k before making off in a Renault Clio.
A source told The Sun: “This was a criminal enterprise committed with military precision.

TWO “professional” burglars caught red-handed through the actions of a boatman have been jailed.
Michael Richard Bray, 39, and Ryan David Cummings, 25, lead a double life, York Crown Court heard.
Both have or have had legitimate work helping to maintain the country’s roads. But they are also criminals who targeted a waterways organisation’s depot and tried to make off with vehicles and power tools.
Carl Fitch, prosecuting, said: “Property in the region of £8,000 would have been stolen had they not been stopped by the police and caught red-handed.”
The Honorary Recorder of York, Judge Paul Batty QC, said of the burglary: “It was steeped in professionalism.”
To carry it out, Bray had travelled “a considerable distance” to Hensall from his home at Trentside Trailer Park at Burringham near Scunthorpe, and Cummings, of George Street, Snaith, had used his local knowledge.
“It is perfectly plain to me you were after valuable equipment,” he said and jailed both for eight months each.
Bray will serve an extra four months as he was on a suspended prison sentence at the time.
Both men pleaded guilty to burglary.
Mr Fitch said a man on a barge alerted police to the pair’s activities at Hensall, near Goole, at 5.30pm on May 21.
They had used an angle grinder to break through an expensive security lock at the Canal and Rivers Trust depot.
By the time police arrived, they had also loaded up a quad bike worth £3,000 onto one of the depot’s trailers, also worth £3,000.
They had hitched the trailer to their flatbed truck, and collected together lawn mowers, strimmers and other tools ready to take away.
For Bray, Chris Morton said he had been a traffic control safety officer earning about £30,000 a year, though he was currently unemployed. He suffered from depression and anxiety and had spent two weeks in hospital in June 2016.
Although Bray had previous convictions for burglary, the last one had been 17 years earlier.
Cummings, who didn’t have a lawyer, said he worked for Highways England creating smart motorways.
Mr Fitch said Bray had 23 convictions and was on a 10-month prison sentence suspended for two years for having indecent images of children when he carried out the Hensall raid.
Cummings had 13 previous convictions. In February 2016, he had been fined £1,300 for professional fly-tipping.
Bray initially tried to claim someone else had done the angle grinding but when the judge said he needed Bray to say so under oath from the witness box, Bray declined. The judge sentenced the pair on the basis they had been the ones who had broken the depot’s security lock.

FIGHTING BACK: North Warrnambool Eagles footballer Adam Wines was in a critical condition after being injured when a metal drum he was cutting into exploded.
NORTH Warrnambool Eagles Football Netball Club is rallying around footballer Adam Wines and his family after the 24-year-old sustained serious burns to his face and upper torso on Friday afternoon.
The Eagles’ leadership group member suffered severe burns to 27 per cent of his body when a metal drum he was cutting into with an angle grinder exploded.
Ambulance Victoria spokesman John Mullen said the service received a call at 4.17pm on Friday for a Woodford address, with a man in his 20s suffering serious burns to his face, arms and chest.
“He was taken through to Warrnambool hospital and then taken out to the airport and flown down to The Alfred in a critical condition,” Mr Mullen said.
On Sunday, North Warrnambool Eagles operations manager Jaime Barr said Wines’ condition was “definitely improving”.
“He’s still in intensive care and will be for a while, but they’ve taken the tube out today and he’s been responsive with his family,” Ms Barr said.
Wines’ mother Sue said doctors were “really confident” he would make a full recovery.
She said the family was “very grateful” for the support it had been shown by the community since the accident occurred.

Around 35 firefighters tackled the fire in a barn at Newmill near Penzance
Sparks from an angle grinder caused a huge barn fire near Penzance that destroyed a tractor and led to fears of an explosion.
The fire broke out on a farm at Newmill at around 2.30pm in a barn containing tractors and gas cylinders.
Around 35 firefighters were called to the blaze and it took almost four hours for the fire to be extinguished and the scene made safe.
Tom Nicholas, crew manager at Penzance fire station, said: "Two crews from Penzance, two from St Ives, a water carrier from Helston and an incident command unit from St Just were called to the scene. We were there till about 6pm.
"We managed to stop the fire from destroying the whole barn. It destroyed half of it and one tractor was destroyed.
"The cause was an angle grinder in the barn. Sparks from the angle grinder. None of the gas cylinders exploded but we had to go through the worst scenario and treat it as though they could explode."

Safety order against man who locked partner in dog kennel is denied
Dublin District Family Court hears man threatened to use angle-grinder on house
Fri, Jul 21, 2017, 01:00
Fiona Gartland
A man was locked in a kennel by his civil partner, who threatened to use an angle-grinder on their property, Dublin District Family Court has heard.
In an application for a safety order, the man told Judge Paula Murphy that last month, in the course of an argument, his partner had pushed him into the dog house in the back garden and had locked the door.
Then he got an angle grinder, said “now you will see what I can do”, and went upstairs in their home.
The applicant said he called gardaí and, on their advice, applied for and obtained a protection order, a short-term safety order.
He told the court that on a separate occasion last year he was in his own room because his partner and he had not been speaking when he discovered his partner had installed a camera above his door.
“It was a complete violation of my privacy,” he said. “I was disgusted.”
On another occasion, he said he was cold in his bedroom and he put the heating on but his partner switched it off. He put the heating on again and his partner pulled the heating switch off the wall.
“I fixed it and when he discovered it was fixed, he pulled it off again and smashed it,” he said.
He also said, in another incident, his partner stormed into his bedroom and smashed up the room and he was cut by shattered glass.
He agreed with his solicitor that he had been in the civil partnership for more than three years, but he was now in fear of his partner and wanted a safety order. This would require his partner not to use violence or threaten to use violence, but would not exclude him from the family home.
Giving evidence, the respondent said his behaviour was a response to the applicant’s behaviour.
“Why do you all the time throw water in my bed?” he asked.
He said the first time it happened, it was in December, his bed was soaked and he had to sleep on the couch for two months. Then he decided to get a lock for the bedroom door.
After getting a lock, he came home from work and found the applicant trying to break down the bedroom door. “As soon as he heard me he stopped doing that and shouted offensive names,” he said. “Out of anger I knocked the door down myself.”
He said the applicant’s bedroom was full of empty bottles and he was drunk. The respondent admitted to having broken some of the bottles and also admitted that his partner had been cut with the glass.
“I went downstairs to get a plaster for him – straight away he called his friend and started laughing about it,” he said.
Asked about the angle-grinder, he said it was “a silly thing” and childish, and he did it to “play with his mind”.
He admitted to having broken the heating and said the house got too warm. He also said there was no battery in the surveillance camera. He accepted he had a temper. He had begged his partner for a divorce, but he would not give him one, he said.
The judge said it was clear the couple had come to the end of their relationship. But she was not convinced the threshold had been reached for a safety order. Instead, the respondent gave a sworn undertaking that he would not use violence.

Plumber cheats death after he slashes open jugular vein when he suffers electric shock and falls on to grinder
By Jon Lockett
4th August 2017, 2:46 pm
A PLUMBER cheated death after he slashed open his jugular vein – when he fell onto a hand-held grinding tool.
Lalubhai Amrutlal Rajpur, 19, was cutting a wall to reach some pipes when an “electrical complication” saw him lose control of the razor-sharp cutter in the Maninagar area of Ahmedabad, India.
It slipped out of his hand and landed on the floor and the teenager fell to the ground – after suffering a suspected electric shock – and landed on the grinder.
He lost consciousness and woke up with the blade wedged into his neck.
Medics at Sheth LG Hospital removed the machine and managed to control the bleeding and the plumber is now in recovery at home.
Dr. RC Shah said: “After doing some basic tests, we immediately performed surgery on him.
“The blade of the machine had made a cut in his skin, muscles and jugular vein.
“We gently removed the machine and repaired the wound.
“His stitches were removed three days back and he was discharged from the hospital.”
The accident happened when Lalubhai was working at the C.T.M Gayatri Temple on July 21.

Three model velociraptors have been beheaded by mystery vandals at an Australian dinosaur museum.
The culprits scaled a 4ft fence and used an angle grinder or hacksaw to remove the dinosaurs' heads, according to police.
The models were in an outside display area at a museum in Canberra and CCTV shows they were damaged late on Saturday evening.
The CCTV also shows a pickup truck driving along the side of the museum building around the same time.
Police believe the people responsible arrived in the vehicle.
"The offenders had climbed a 4ft fence to gain entry," said Australian Capital Territory police.
"The damage sustained to the (three velociraptor) dinosaurs indicate that an angle grinder or hacksaw was used to remove the heads from the body."
Damage to the exhibit was discovered by children visiting the museum the next morning.

"We went out to check it out and three of our dinosaurs here have been decapitated," museum staffer Mitchell Seymour told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
"We had heaps of kids coming up and going 'oh mum and dad, what's wrong with the dinosaurs?'
"It's selfish, and it's thoughtless is what it is."
In 2013 a giant fibreglass dinosaur was stolen from the museum.
It was later found in the home of a man who said it was taken as a birthday prank, according to local media.
Police are now looking for any witnesses to the vandalism.
