MillerCoors is bringing back Zima for a limited release beginning Fourth of July weekend.
Chicago-based MillerCoors, the U.S. subsidiary of Molson Coors Brewing Co., said that the clear malt beverage Zima, which enjoyed a run of popularity in the early 1990s before fizzling out, is going to be back in the U.S. nationwide after an absence of nearly a decade.
“It was brought back because '90s inspiration is everywhere, from food to fashion, and more - it’s clear the decade has made a comeback,†said Marty Maloney, MillerCoors spokesman. “That’s why it’s the perfect time for our very own '90s legend, Zima, to return for a limited time.â€
Zima was first sold by Coors in 1993, and MillerCoors, which has a major brewery in Milwaukee, is working to bring back the beverage’s “original look and feel.â€
“We got some of the people that worked on Zima in the '90s to recreate the look, feel and taste so that it is almost identical to the original,†said Maloney. “People will be able to purchase it in a 6-pack and drink it out of the fluted bottle while tasting the refreshing citrus beverage they remember.â€
Despite capturing nearly 1 percent of the domestic alcohol market during its peak, the brand never achieved lasting success with its target demographic of young men. MillerCoors discontinued U.S. sales in 2008, but Zima remained popular in Japan as a nightclub drink.
For the limited release in the U.S., however, “once it’s gone, it’s gone,†said Maloney.

Japan is a civilized country where you are allowed to drink on the street.
