Mary Ellen Croteau

About Mary:

Mary Ellen Croteau is an artist whose work directly addresses the absurdities of social norms, and lays bare the underlying bias and sexist assumptions on which our culture is constructed.

Mary explains her work by saying, “The function of the visual in consumer culture is to overwhelm and imprint, rendering us passive vessels for received wisdom. Vast databases of disconnected facts, driven by arcane mathematical formulae rather than by a creative or logical progression of thought, do more to confuse and disconnect us from the information we need to control our world than they do to facilitate it. My work is an attempt to counter this trend toward disembodied ‘intelligence’.

I firmly believe in the power of the visual, and my work is my voice: a social critique and a visual challenge to all the cultural detritus we are force-fed every day. My art is about looking at things in a slightly different way, and is intended to undermine the status quo with wit and humor.”

Ramizan [redux] - October 23, 2012

Ramizan [redux]
Vincent says: Ramizan came into my life last September when my professor entered the classroom with a suspicious look on her face, closed the door, then pulled out one of the tiniest kittens I had ever seen from her purse. The day before, she caught a neighborhood kid about to “dispose of” the poor thing in a nearby dumpster and thankfully stopped her before the deed could be done. However, the kitten was so underfed, dirty, and sickly that she herself couldn’t get it to eat or drink, and so in exasperation brought it to class to see if any of the students were willing to take care of it. I always considered myself a “dog person,” but after four hours of class, with the little creature perched next to my textbook as if reading along with me, my heart was won over. I volunteered to take care of the kitten for the next six months, then give her back. While good souls are rescuing many kittens daily in Western countries, our situation was unique in that we were living in a place called Xinjiang in China, located deep in the heart of the Eurasian continent and populated with a Turkic people, the Uyghurs, closer to the Afghans and Uzbeks than the people of inner China. That month happened to be Ramadan, a Muslim religious season where people do not eat and drink anything during the day, and so when Ramizan refused to eat and drink, we joked that she was “fasting,” and thus she got her name, the Uyghur word for "Ramadan." Luckily, some kitten food softened with warm water was just the ticket and and after a few weeks (and a much needed bath) Ramizan was back to full health and living the happy, playful life every kitten deserves. As you all can guess, after six months passed, I abandoned the plan of “giving Ramizan back” and we went through the utter red-tape nightmare of applying for Ramizan’s “animal passport” as required by Chinese law. But we did it, and after a grueling 30 hours in an aviation kennel we lovingly call the “AdventureMobile,” Ramizan made it to her new home in Tennessee, USA. A kitten with Uyghur ancestry, a Chinese passport, and American residency, Ramizan is, in my eyes, a true feline globetrotter.

Isaac Haxton Newest Member of Team PokerStars Online

After a few days of keeping poker fans guessing last week, PokerStars finally announced Thursday that Isaac Haxton has been added to the roster of Team PokerStars Online. The world’s largest online poker room ran a promotion allowing customers to guess the new member’s identity for the opportunity to win $50.

On Tuesday, the day the promotion was launched, PokerStars offered up one clue to those wishing to take a guess: a 44 second video from Randy “nanonoko” Lew. Lew didn’t provide much info, purposely remaining very vague and stating that the new member of Team PokerStars Online was a male high stakes player and he had once made a deep run at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA).

The next day it got ugly as Daniel Negreanu provided more clues via a video in which he serenaded views with a cringe-worthy rendition of Toni Braxton’s “Unbreak My Heart.” Someone who had no idea what he was singing would find the clue of no use, but those who could identify the song might have realized that “Braxton” was the key to figuring out the new player was “Haxton.”

Haxton burst upon the scene at the beginning of 2007, achieving his first live tournament in cash in style when he finished second at the windy outdoor final table of the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Championship Event. That accomplishment is still important to him today, saying in his introduction video that the $861,789 cash “…was a crazy, once in a lifetime experience that’s always going to stay with me and that I always get a little nostalgic for every time I go back to the Bahamas to play.”

In 2007 and 2008, Haxton cashed in the World Series of Poker eight times before really hitting it big in 2009, when he finished second in the WSOP’s $40,000 40th Anniversary Event, scoring $1,168,565. Other significant cashes include a third place finish in the 2011 Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic $100,000 High Roller Event ($581,806) and a third place in the 2012 PCA $25,000 8-Max High Roller Event ($380,730).

All told Isaac Haxton has just over $4 million live poker tournament winnings.

In his intro video, Haxton also gave a hint as to a future promotion in which he would be involved at poker stars, saying, “I can’t give you any firm details just yet, but I will tell you that it’s going to involve heads-up No-Limit. There’s going to be some very high stakes stuff and there’s also going to be some stuff that everybody can participate in and it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Today's picture shows a group of Atsina Warriors overlooking their camp. The picture was taken in 1908 in Montana. I count about 11 Tipis in the camp. By this time most Indian Hostilities had ended.
