About Owen:

Owen Schuh earned a M.F.A. in painting and Drawing from Temple,University and a B.A. in fine art from Haverford, College.

He explains his work by saying, “My work seeks to illuminate the entwining relations between embodied mind, mathematics, and the physical world. My artwork is structured by mathematical functions, which though relatively simple in nature yield outcomes of surprising organic complexity.

A mathematical relation may be represented as easily by symbols on a page as drops of paint or an arrangement of beer mugs. Anything can stand for anything, but the underlying structure remains constant. In each piece I strive to manifest phenomena unique to the interaction between the physical medium and the logical structure.

Through research and experimentation I choose mathematical functions that model the interactions and structure of living systems.”

Samson-the-Great-Pyrenees-Mix

http://cdn-www.dailypuppy.com/dog-im...11-14_w450.jpg
Meet Samson! He is half Great Pyrenees with a little Rottweiler and Lab thrown in. He is such a smart, sweet, handsome boy who can't get enough cuddles or kisses, and neither can we! He loves to sleep in our arms and since he weighs in at 20 pounds at almost 9 weeks and is growing fast, we let him do it as often as possible. Samson also loves to chew on everything, including his tail when he catches it, but since he is eager to please he's quickly learning that the carpet, walls, curtains, sideboards, cupboards, and couch legs are not chew toys. Samson lives in British Columbia and loves to be outside in all weather, but especially the snow. We love him dearly and couldn't have adopted a better, more precious puppy to share our lives with!

Scrawny (a.k.a. MeToo)

Location: Aizawl, Mizoram, India

http://www.dailykitten.com/wp-conten...3-IMG_0766.jpg

Meet MeToo; my kitten Charger’s semi-feral brother. MeToo was taken back by mama cat but she abandoned/left him around his 3rd month. The poor little fuzz was scrawny and starving as he had not yet learned to fend for himself. Unfortunately he had learned to fear humans from his mama so it was initially very difficult to even approach him to feed him. I would hear his distressed cries every night in the wooded are a behind our house. He has a very high pitched nasal cry and is extremely vocal compared to my ninja Charger.

It took over two months to get him to trust me through daily feedings but thankfully now he is quite comfortable with me and eats like its going out of style! He recognizes my call when it’s feeding time and he responds even a mile away with his high pitched cry and comes running.

This month there was further progress as he started playing with my niece and me. He’s still learning his boundaries with us though and as obvious from the picture he is more than double the size of Charger although they are litter mates so he is very strong.

He has become the official outside cat for us and stays on our kitchen step almost entire day or under the SUV parked outside our kitchen porch. He spends the nights on my Uncle’s porch next door. I am hoping to tame him enough soon to take him for his ‘Spa Day’ at the vets’. Suffice to say Charger and he do not get along as he seems to think Charger is competition whereas my innocent Chargeroo just wants to sniff and explore this strange creature that has claimed our kitchen stoop. All in good time I guess!

A Tortie Mom's Ginger Kitten [redux] - November 14, 2012

A Tortie Mom's Ginger Kitten [redux]
Larry says: We run a small rescue in upstate New York called Little Mews. We take in needy and homeless cats and kittens and care for them and try to find them homes. Any kitten who isn't adopted has a home here until they are. We do place some adult cats as well but if we don't place them they stay right here. When one of our rescue cats, Indica, came to us, she came with her two kittens, a little grey girl and a little orange boy. He was feisty and fun. The orange-and-white cat looking at him in the photo is Mac (short for Macaroni and Cheese). He came to us as a kitten as well but wasn't adopted. The black-and-white cat is Chessie. She always has that smile and we kept her on purpose. She loves helping to care for the kittens that come through here, even if the momma cat is around. When Zoey was adopted, the lady who took her had just lost her cats in a divorce, so she also took Zoe's brother and named him Teddie. Indica is still with us and can often be found on my lap.

Paranal Deep Sky

ESO Photo Ambassador, Babak Tafreshi has captured an outstanding image of the sky over ESO’s Paranal Observatory, with a treasury of deep-sky objects.

The most obvious of these is the Carina Nebula, glowing intensely red in the middle of the image. The Carina Nebula lies in the constellation of Carina (The Keel), about 7500 light-years from Earth. This cloud of glowing gas and dust is the brightest nebula in the sky and contains several of the brightest and most massive stars known in the Milky Way, such as Eta Carinae. The Carina Nebula is a perfect test-bed for astronomers to unveil the mysteries of the violent birth and death of massive stars. For some beautiful recent images of the Carina Nebula from ESO, see eso1208, eso1145, and eso1031.

Below the Carina Nebula, we see the Wishing Well Cluster (NGC 3532). This open cluster of young stars was named because, through a telescope’s eyepiece, it looks like a handful of silver coins twinkling at the bottom of a wishing well. Further to the right, we find the Lambda Centauri Nebula (IC 2944), a cloud of glowing hydrogen and newborn stars which is sometimes nicknamed the Running Chicken Nebula, from a bird-like shape that some people see in its brightest region (see eso1135). Above this nebula and slightly to the left we find the Southern Pleiades (IC 2632), an open cluster of stars that is similar to its more familiar northern namesake.

In the foreground, we see three of the four Auxiliary Telescopes (ATs) of the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI). Using the VLTI, the ATs — or the VLT’s 8.2-meter Unit Telescopes — can be used together as a single giant telescope which can see finer details than would be possible with the individual telescopes. The VLTI has been used for a broad range of research including the study of circumstellar discs around young stellar objects and of active galactic nuclei, one of the most energetic and mysterious phenomena in the Universe.

Noah Schwartz Wins 2012 WPT bestbet Jacksonville Fall Poker Scramble

If it seemed like an inevitability going into the final table that Noah Schwartz would win the World Poker Tour (WPT) bestbet Jacksonville Fall Poker Scramble Main Event, it’s because it was. Schwartz entered final table play Tuesday with close to half the chips in play and cruised into the heads-up portion of the match. It was at that point that he actually had to work for his first WPT title, but he did finish what he started, earning $402,970.

As you can see, Schwartz had a dominating chip lead when final table play started Tuesday:

1.11 1Noah Schwartz – 6,255,000
2.11 1Hans Winzeler – 1,965,000
3.11 1Brian Senie – 1,865,000
4.11 1Lee Markholt – 1,720,000
5.11 1Ryan Hartmann – 1,400,000
6.11 1Byron Kaverman – 1,075,000

And starting with the very first hand, the lead got even bigger. Hans Winzeler made a min-raise pre-flop to 80,000, Brian Senie three-bet to 200,000, Schwartz four-bet to 570,000, and then Lee Markholt, the only man at the final table with a WPT title to his name, five-bet all-in for 1.715 million. Quite the start to the day. Schwartz was the only one who made the call, showing Q-Q against Markholt’s A-K. The flop came down T-5-5, which was not much use to Markholt. The J on the turn, though, gave him both a flush draw and a gutshot straight draw, so it was time for a sweat. The river was the 7, eliminating Markholt in 6th place and launching Schwartz’s chip stack to just under 8 million.

After that, it was largely a matter of the other four players holding on for dear life, going all-in when they needed to in an attempt to double-up. Brian Senie was next player to go, his Q-T dominated by Schwartz’s K-T. Out in 4th place was Winzeler, eliminated by Byron Kaverman. That was the point where things started to get more interesting, as Kaverman had already been able to double-up once. That combined with the Winzeler elimination sent Kaverman’s stack up to over 5 million chips, putting him well within striking distance of Schwartz.

On hand 68 of the final table, Kaverman took out Ryan Hartmann to go into heads-up play against Schwartz with a slight chip lead, 7.16 million to 7.1 million, the first time Schwartz was not leading the final table.

With the stacks so close, one would think it would take some time to determine the champion, and at first, it looked like it would. Schwartz did win the first five heads-up hands, but for the most part, the two players were just nipping at each other. Then, suddenly, on the 12th hand of heads-up play, it was all over.

Kaverman raised pre-flop to 250,000 and Schwartz called. On the flop of T-9-3, Kaverman bet 400,000 and Schwartz again called. When the 4 was dealt on the turn, Kaverman bet 700,000, Schwartz raised him to 1.925 million, and Kaverman decided to put all his chips at risk.

Schwartz called, revealing Q-T, giving him a flush draw and top pair. Kaverman had T-9, good for top two pair. The river was the Q, giving Schwartz a re-suckout with a better two pair, eliminating Kaverman in second place.

Noah Schwartz received $402,970 for his first WPT title, which includes his entry into the season-ending WPT Championship at the Bellagio.

2012 WPT bestbet Jacksonville Fall Poker Scramble Main Event – Final Table Standings

1.11 1Noah Schwartz1 -1 $402,970
2.11 1Byron Kaverman1 -1 $236,592
