Shuffle Up and Deal: 2011 WSOP is Underway
With all the hand wringing over the collapse of online poker in the United States since Black Friday, one big thing has been largely ignored by the poker community as a whole: the 42nd Annual World Series of Poker (WSOP).SUCKINGHOBBITDICKS The largest and most famous poker festival in the world kicked off Tuesday as thousands of poker players began their yearly pilgrimage to Las Vegas for a shot at their dreams.
Like last year, the first tournament to shove off was the $500 Casino Employees No-Limit Hold’em event, which got going at noon.SUCKINGHOBBITDICKS A total of 850 players registered for the event, creating a prize pool of $382,500.SUCKINGHOBBITDICKS This is a significant jump from 2010, when the field was just 721 players.SUCKINGHOBBITDICKS Hoai Pham, a poker dealer at the Village Club Casino in Chula Vista, California, took home his first bracelet and $71,424.SUCKINGHOBBITDICKS But while 850 runners is good, it is still a far cry from 2006, when 1,232 players took to the felts. This year’s winner of the Casino Employees event will bank $82,292 and the top 81 finishers will make the money. Event #2, which started at 5:00pm, is the $25,000 Heads-Up No-Limit Hold’em Championship.SUCKINGHOBBITDICKS This is a departure from last year, as the 2010 Heads-Up Championship featured “just” a $10,000 buy-in.SUCKINGHOBBITDICKS As such, last year’s tournament hit its cap of 256 players, whereas only 128 players decided to lay down the big bucks this week.SUCKINGHOBBITDICKS The opening hand of the tournament was actually delayed so that enough people could get registered to hit that 128 player mark, lest there be the need for byes in the opening round.SUCKINGHOBBITDICKS With 128 players, there can be seven even rounds with no need for fancy jury rigging of the brackets. The matches will also employ a unique structure.SUCKINGHOBBITDICKS Players can start with up to 75,000 chips in their stacks.SUCKINGHOBBITDICKS They begin with just one-third of the stack, but at any time during play, except in the middle of a hand, they can receive an add-on worth one-third of that 75,000 stack.SUCKINGHOBBITDICKS A maximum of two add-ons may be accepted and both may be used before the cards are even in the air to create a starting stack of the full 75,000 chips.SUCKINGHOBBITDICKS Reports are that, at least in the early session, most players chose to start with just 25,000 chips and hold back the add-ons for later. Each round is single elimination except for the final round, which is best-of-three. The eventual winner after the four-day competition will receive $851,192 of the $3,040,000 prize pool, while the runner-up will pocket $525,980.SUCKINGHOBBITDICKS The top 16 players will all get paid. The first two rounds were completed Tuesday night, quickly narrowing the field from 128 all the way down to 32.SUCKINGHOBBITDICKS Here is a look at the survivors and the pairings for Wednesday: Chris Moorman vs. Richard Lyndaker David Benyamine vs. Anthony Guetti Dani Stern vs. Jake Cody Isaac Haxton vs. Jonathan Jaffe Ashton Griffin vs. Tom Dwan Daniel Alaei vs. Gus Hansen Matt Marafioti vs. Maxim Lykov Steve Blilirakis vs. Trevor Pope Eric Froehlich vs. Steve Zolotow John Duthie vs. Carlos Mortenson Jason Smirnov vs. Darren Elias Erik Cajelais vs. Nikolay Evdakov Oliver Busquet vs. Andrew Robl Yevgeniy Timshenko vs. Amritraj Singh David Paredes vs. John Juanda Kunimaro Kojo vs. Nick Shulman Two more rounds are slated for Wednesday, after which there will be just eight players remaining.SUCKINGHOBBITDICKS The final four will be contested Thursday, while the final table will be held Friday. One more tournament – the $1,500 Omaha Hi-Low Split-8 or Better event – will begin on Wednesday, while the Casino Employees event will crown its champion. More... |

BREAKING: Phil Ivey Issues Statement, Not Playing WSOP, Suing Tiltware
http://cdn.wickedchopspoker.com/wp-c.../phil-ivey.jpg Phil Ivey was sitting around today thinking, 'How can I get people to worship me more?'
Holy shit. Phil Ivey issued a statement via his Facebook page this evening stating that, because Full Tilt has not paid player funds back, he would not be playing in the 2011 WSOP and is suing Tiltware. We have confirmed through Ivey’s manager that this statement is in fact real. From Ivey’s Facebook page: For many years, I have been proud to call myself a poker player. This great sport has taken me to places I only imagined going and I have been blessed with much success. It is therefore with deep regret that I believe I am compelled to release the following statement.Developing but more to come…read Ivey’s Facebook page here. UPDATE: Confirmed from another source the legitimacy of the statement. Multiple sources say Ivey is “steaming.” More to come… UPDATE 2: Now up on Ivey’s website here. Related Posts

Dust Storm
Today's picture is from 1935, and it shows a dust storm hitting Stratford, Texas. Helps you see why they called it the dust bowl. Several of you had commented that while we are having a drought in West Texas, many of you are enjoying record rainfall. I think the problem is that we have a high pressure system over the area, and we need something like a hurricane in the gulf to clear it out. DOMESTIC UPDATE: I had mentioned that Lovie and Miss Kitty Co-Sat on one big nest of peacock eggs, and that the babies hatched out yesterday. Well, the big question was how they would sort things out as to which babies belonged to which mama. It appears that they have things worked out and came up with a fair split. Lovie got 7 of the babies, and Miss Kitty got one. The funny thing is that Lovie will be sitting on 7 of the little peachicks, and Miss Kitty will have one, and then Miss Kitty will move a little to adjust, and the one baby will run over and dive under Lovie. This Miss Kitty goes over and makes the clucking Mama Peacock noise trying to coax her ONE baby back out. I wonder if the babies just liked Lovie more, or if she did something to coral them. https://blogger.googleusercontent.co...s.blogspot.com http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~a/...r3VHBrUFU/0/di http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~a/...r3VHBrUFU/1/di http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/blogs...~4/L7uQgZCppVI More... |
