About Rena: In this series of self-portraits I explore issues of identity and the loss of it through censorship and self-censorship, consumerism and commodification. A battle is played out between who we think we are, who we would like to be, and who we think others want us to be. There is a slightly surreal flavour to them, with a play of inner turmoil and a looming uncertainty of reality and how we perceive it. Black Student Turned Down as Valedictorian by Little Rock School

From Courthouse News: A high school southeast of Little Rock would not let a black student be valedictorian though she had the highest grade-point average, and wouldn't let her mom speak to the school board about it until graduation had passed, the graduate claims in Federal Court. Kymberly Wimberly, 18, got only a single B in her 4 years at McGehee Secondary School, and loaded up on Honors and Advanced Placement classes. She had the highest G.P.A. and says the school's refusal to let her be sole valedictorian was part of a pattern of discrimination against black students. Wimberly says that despite earning the highest G.P.A. of the Class of 2011, and being informed of it by a school counselor, "school administrators and personnel treated two other white students as heir[s] apparent to the valedictorian and salutatorian spots." Zeus Ted and Laura say: We met and fell in love with Zeus at our local Country Max store. Country Max generously houses a cat or kitten from the SPCA or SNAP each week. Over 300 cats have been adopted through participation with our local Country Max. Apparently, Zeus was rescued from being abandoned and received loving foster care from our SPCA shelter manager (thank you Sandy!). Zeus is a three-month-old black tabby kitten with a personality that melts our hearts and makes us laugh. He is a little force of nature with unstoppable energy. We now understand what bouncing off the walls actually looks like! He is also very generous with affection when he shifts into low gear. He has big, beautiful, copper eyes and a silky sable-colored coat with black shadow stripes. His toes look like tiny kalamata olives. He has a thin white line around his mouth that creates the visual impression that he is puckering up to kiss or say “oooooh." He is all legs, ears and tail right now. We will often wake up to him using us as terrain as he chases and pounces on his nine-inch tail. (Yes, we measured it while he was sleeping). He has taught us that virtually anything can be used as a toy, that a kitten will eat fresh raw peas if you turn your back for one moment, and that sleeping deeply is an art to be savored.
