i can tell you exactly why.

the man has made a lot of movies, but he _loves_ the riddick series. he also has had tremendous creative influence on the previous two, and both of them (like it or not) are considered very solid offerings in a hugely critical genre.

so why stack up on a third film?

so he can retain creative control.

seriously.

and the best part is, its going to work. its not going to be on anyones top ten all time sci fi list but its going to be yet another reasonably solid entry into a genre the man loves, and its going to be one he can be legit proud of.
