put about a tablespoon of vegetable oil in the skillet and then turned the burner to high until it started smoking..
then took it off the heat and waited about 30 seconds and put the patty on and reduced the heat on the burner to medium
flipped it twice and cooked about a total of 90 seconds on each side...perfect 'medium' burger
foolproof method for not burning or overcooking it is to turn the heat to max and then let the skillet cool off just a little...then put it back on the burner at a lower heat
