Two workers severely burned in fire at Memphis International Raceway
POSTED 6:31 PM, AUGUST 28, 2019, BY JERRITA PATTERSON
MEMPHIS, Tenn. ? Shelby County fire investigators say two men were using a grinder to remove a lid on a barrel of fuel at the Memphis International Raceway Wednesday morning, when things went terribly wrong.
They say sparks from the grinder came into contact with residual fuel outside of the barrel. One victim was burned over 35 percent of his body. The second victim sustained injuries over 50 percent.
"They were in great pain. Our ambulance paramedics and EMT's were able to start applying immediate high-level care, and we got them right over to the hospital," Brent Perkins, with Shelby County Fire Department, said.
At last check, both victims were fighting for their lives. Unfortunately, this is not the first time first responders have been called to Victory Lane. In July 2019, there was a similar scene when a 55-gallon drum on the back of a Tradebe truck caught fire.
Three victims were rushed to the hospital. A month later, there were four more victims who were injured in a chemical fire at the same location.
Fast forward just 19 days, and another fire left more victims in its wake.

A five-year-old girl's arm was blown off in Germany over the weekend when her father used an angle grinder to cut open a gasoline barrel and the sparks set off an explosion.
The girl's 39-year-old mother was also seriously injured in the blast which took place in an allotment garden in Hamelin, Lower Saxony on Saturday.
Her father and another man were using an angle grinder early in the evening to cut open a petrol barrel, police said.
Police said the men failed to check if there was still fuel inside
The men sliced through the metal, causing sparks from the grinder to ignite the remaining petrol.
The gases exploded, launching the barrel's lid at the youngster and taking off her arm, NDR 1 Lower Saxony reported.
Two air ambulances attended and took the girl and her mother to hospital, where both are listed in critical condition.
The two men escaped with minor injuries. A regular ambulance took one of them to hospital with blast trauma.
According to German broadcaster Radio-Aktiv, two rescue helicopters, several ambulances and a large number of rescue workers were initially deployed due to early confusion over the incident.

german police are idiots too, it's not enough to merely make sure there's no gasoline left in the gasoline barrel before you start grinding, you have to purge the vapors by filling the barrel with water and you probably should use something other than a grinder to cut it
