Default Attn: Sonatine. Political dramaz unfolding....

Might be worth keeping an eye on this as it develops.

Thaksin [corrupt former PM deposed by a military coup a few yrs back] has announced 'General' Chaovalit will lead the new "People's Army" - ostensibly to create civil war.

There's a fairly decent chance Thaksin is just losing the plot now as it looks like he's going to lose his $2 billion fortune - the entire thing might be a bit farcical.

But Thailand has been teetering close to the brink of Civil War for some years now. So it might not be as silly as some commentators are making out.

Abisit [current PM] is basically the Obama of Asia and probably one of the most intelligent / calm politicians I've ever seen in action so it's likely he will defuse this situation as he's done a number of times since his party rose to power.

But one thing is for certain: Thaksin and the Red Shirts are building up to a crescendo - a last ditch effort imo. The Red Shirts leader has been splashing the front pages with talk of imminent coup which he claims is inevitable.

This could get very very ugly fast.

I'm all for Revolucion but this is one somewhat ironic spot where those who overthrew the democratically elected government in a military coup...are the good guys.

If another coo occurs, it will not be a 'good' one. And it will almost certainly spark the nation into all-out Civil War.

When you throw the Royal Family into the mix [supporters of the current government]...and consider the beloved King could pass away literally any day [or so they say]...with the Crown Prince [kinda unpopular] and his younger sister [very very popular] potentially playing chess with each other as the King's health deteriorates...

This could get very very ugly fast.

I like talking politics. I have very little to add here on Thailand politics other than exploring your comment about a military dictator thowing out the democratically elected govt and those are the good guys. Lets discuss the breakdown of a democratically elected government.

1. Would they get elected today?
2. If not, is there a process for replacing them or what?
3. This intrigues me, any other examples of this in other countries?

She's not um hot per se - unfortunately - if she was, I would literally give my life to fight for her cause. If she had one.

I'm pretty much skatzing waiting for a cute Princess to call me to arms.

I met an honest-to-god real princess once in Manila. True story. She was one of like hundreds of princesses though - all nieces to the Sultan of Brunei. She was maybe the cutest girl I've ever seen and pretty certain we were going to live happily ever after. Until she walked in on me in compromising circumstances with another dude's bargirl [hooker] in the guest room at the recovery party we were at. She didn't say anything specifically but her face said it all. She moved to New York and we haven't spoken since. We only spoke twice prior to the 'incident'. But there was definitely chemistry. My life's been going downhill since then.

In other news, the Thai Crown Prince married his first cousin. I don't know if she's hot.

1. The military handed power back to the National Assembly, who promptly elected a new PM who was Thaksin's stooge. lolz. So the High Court had to get involved, and they banned Thaksin's political party, allowing Abisit's party to rise to power.

Abisit is god. He's just amazing. He would totally get elected in a landslide if they held an election today [with Thaksin's party banned]. He's extremely popular and he's probably single-handedly owned the Red Shirts with his cool, calm demeanor and refusal to allow the Army to hurt any of them when they protest.

Would Thaksin have a chance if allowed to run in fresh elections? It's complicated. Maybe. But these elections are very complex and have a great deal to do with propaganda and splashing cash around. Thailand's political and cultural elite all reside in Bangkok and support the King [and the current government]. But there are tens of millions of very simple peasants who will kinda vote for whomever gives them a few baht - which Thaksin did very effectively [if indirectly] leading up to his election victory.

Everyone was kind of okay with Thaksin initially. But he had delusions of grandeur. When he started running propaganda campaigns to rival the King's, he signed his own gg warrant. You can't fuck with the Royal Family in Thailand - literally. You'll likely be sent to prison for lese majeste - unless you flee [as Thaksin has]. Funny story kinda: When the Crown Prince wanted to divorce his first wife, she refused to give him one so he took her to court. In court he accused her of being 100% to blame for the breakdown of the marriage. She couldn't say a word otherwise she'd be guilty of lese majeste - so she was forced to stay silent, divorce was granted, skatz.

2. As above. The military is very power-hungry in Thailand [as in all SE Asian countries]. But Thailand has a surprisingly advanced political IQ - in that even poor people are very interested in politics and a military government would be heckled out of office quickly. It's really only Abisit's genius that has chilled out the nation - he wasn't elected democratically and I think if it were any other major player, Thaksin would have mass support and the country would either be in Civil War or on the brink of it [pending developments in the King's state of health].

3. Examples of coups? Philippines has a coup every few years. Fiji and co are usually good for some fun coups where some joke Lieutenant and his buddies take over government just cause they can. Excellent drama when stuff like that happens. Australia usually jumps in and spoils the fun. Fucking narcs...
