This Sunday, local residents routed a high-profile police raid on a Bang Sue casino by attacking the raiding police officers with whatever was on hand, sometimes resorting to hurling scalding water on officers in order to protect their turf.
The casino in question has been a thorn in the Division 2 police’s side for some time. Police first raided the establishment, located off Techa Wanit road, in 2011 and this February, the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO), froze ownership of the casino’s land.
After at least two years of trying to take down this casino, cops decided this Sunday to try and overrun it by means of brute force. The operation this Sunday involved 200 police officers, including 50 detectives and 150 heavily armed riot police.
However, poor coordination between these two groups allowed the casino’s owners and patrons to escape unharmed.
The 50 detectives originally turned up at the casino, where fortified entryways kept them from carrying out their mandate. These detectives withstood attacks from local citizens while waiting for a 150-strong backup force, which turned up long after the casino’ dealers and clients had fled.
Again faced with problems from the casino’s fortifications, this secondary unit resorted to scaling buildings opposite the casino and trying to enter it from its second and third floors, all the while receiving attacks from locals in the form of hurled rocks and wooden sticks.
No arrests resulted from the raid, but the Bangkok Post reports that two officers were injured in the action nonetheless. According to police sources, a police major and a captain fell while scaling the casino’s roof and a falling roof tile struck a sergeant major, landing him with a skull laceration.
Sopharat Phantharak, 36, from Village 5 in Mokhlan Subdistrict, has placed the miraculous object on a pedestal lined with white cloth and is inviting local villagers to come and pay their respects to it.
Mrs Sopharat, who is already a mother of four, claims that before the miraculous nativity she had a strange dream in which an angel gave her the egg, as well as the white cloth.
Now, local villagers are flocking to her house to see the miracle, with many of them prostrating themselves in front of the egg, which looks just like that of a chicken. Mrs Sopharat has also placed a silver tray next to the object for villagers to leave money and gain merit, in accordance with Thai tradition.
Police officers are investigating Mrs Sopharat to see if they can charge her with fraud.
Kitti Rattanasombat, the director of Tha Sala Hospital, told Thai national newspaper Khao Sod that “normal people don’t give birth to eggs”.
Mr Kitti added that women were usually pregnant for nine months before giving birth to a baby.
He admitted that abnormal births were possible, but insisted that giving birth to a “duck egg, chicken egg or reptile egg” was something that does not happen.
This was more likely to be due to someone making up stories to get attention, he said.
Mr Kitti said Mrs Sopharat had previously been to the hospital complaining of stomach pains and writhing intestines, and that at the end of last year she had been checked for pregnancy.
She had also been to the hospital a week earlier complaining of stomach pains, but no trace of pregnancy was found.
Superintendent Suthep Kosakul of Tha Sala Police Station said officers had examined the egg and confirmed it was a chicken egg with “nothing special” about it.
“I suspect the whole household isn’t normal,” said Col Suthep. “They say she gave birth to an egg. Whether this constitutes fraud or not, it’s too early to say.”
Khao Sod confirmed that most villagers who saw the egg did not believe it was the result of Mrs Sopharat giving birth. Some said that if the object had been a lump of flesh of some sort, they might have believed it – but not a chicken egg.
An Algerian man who is believed to be the creator of the infamous Banking Trojan "SpyEye" was extradited from Thailand to the United States to face charges.
Hamza Bendelladj, 24-year-old, also known as Bx1, will face charges for allegedly playing a role in developing, marketing ,distributing and controlling the SpyEye virus, according to FBI report.
SpyEye is a Banking Trojan(similar to Zeus virus) that steals confidential personal data and finance information such as online banking credentials , credit card information.
He was arrested at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok, Thailand, on Jan 5, while he was in transit from Malaysia to Egypt.
If convicted, he will face a maximum sentence of up to 30 years in prison for conspiracy to commit wire and bank fraud; up to 20 years for each wire fraud count; up to five years for conspiracy to commit computer fraud; up to five or 10 years for each count of computer fraud; and fines of up to $14 million.
