Ayutthaya public health office is preparing to move about two tonnes of condoms from a rice field in Bang Barn district for proper disposal after it was discovered that cancer-causing substances were found in the condoms.
Meanwhile, officials of the office have launched an investigation to and to find out how the tainted condoms were dumped in the rice field close to an irrigation canal in Tambon Saphan Thai and by whom. About a tonne of the abandoned condoms has been burned.
Health officials on Tuesday conducted a field inspection of the abandoned condoms and took some of the samples for testing before all the remaining rubber would be moved out and burned at a furnace in Bang Pa-in industrial estate.
Latest report said that a woman, Mrs Napatthara Menthong, reported herself to the provincial health officials to claim that she owned the condoms. She reportedly said that she bought the defected condoms from a factory in PathumThani and kept it for about a year until the price of rubber has gone up and decided to sell them to recycling plant.
However, she said that she took out the condoms to dry in the sun first but unfortunately they caught fire. She insisted that she did not intentionally dumped the condoms.
