A body was found in the Truckee River Tuesday afternoon at a park near downtown Reno.
The body was reported at about 4 p.m. by a passerby at Brohed Memorial Park, just east of the Greater Nevada Field stadium.
"We had a citizen walking through the park and he sees what he thinks is a body in the middle of the river, in the thicket, in the trees," said Lt. William Rulla, of the Reno Police Department.
He then ran across the street to the nearby police station to report it , Rulla said.
The Reno Fire Department's water rescue team found the body and pulled it out of the water.
"It looks like it's badly decomposed," Rulla said. "It looks like it's been there for a while, so it's unknown if its a male or female right at this point," Rulla said.
John Woodard spent his day at the park relaxing on the bench across from where the body was later found.
He said he smelt something in the wind and left. he later returned to the park to find police had blocked off the path.
“I smelled something rotten, and I thought it was an animal," Woodward said.
The body was caught along several downed trees near the riverbank. It was taken to the Washoe County Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.
Robbery and homicide detectives were checking recent missing persons reports.
The cause of death and the identity of the body was unknown and still under investigation. Authorities are awaiting the results of the autopsy exam, Rulla said.
"If they feel there is anything suspicious, they will let us know," he said. "...Obviously if there is something suspicious, then we will take it up a notch and investigate it as a crime."
Battalion Chief Mark Winkelman said people should stay out of the river.
"High flows, low temperatures combined make it very difficult to get out of the river once you're in it," Winkelman said. "Hypothermia sets in quickly and you're not able to swim on your own, and this is the kind of result we can see."
There is no indication that the deceased was involved in Spey Casting, however it cannot be ruled out.
