About Sam:

Sam Gibbons’ paintings are fascinating renderings of cartoons perversely entwined in spasms of death and candy-colored imitations of sex. Gibbons’ work is a painterly convergence of figuration and abstraction; resembling a Rorschach test, one side of the canvas mirrors the other, lending symmetry and precision to fluid and spontaneous bursts of color and form. Employing imagery that was originally intended to entertain and pacify, Gibbons’ paintings are at war within themselves. The typical role of the cartoon is subverted; these benchmarks of inexperience are engaged in violent and sexual acts. Acting as allegories for the loss of innocence, Sam Gibbons’ paintings exist as a complex and beautiful mimicry of the human condition.

Selina (and Friends)
Denise says: Selina was another stray that showed up on my porch on day. The granddaughter of one of my neighbors named her. She wasn't much for sitting still for pets and refused to be held, but she was sweet, playful, etc. -- a normal kitten I think. With so many animals to care for, I was reluctant to add another kitten and before I made up my mind she was gone. The funny thing is I'm sure I saw her a few months later in a Petco Pet Adoption event. The age was right and her eyes were unmistakeable. When she was around, she just loved the bunnies. She seemed to be totally fascinated by them. And they seemed to like her too. Happy Easter to all.

This crater just north of Ophir Cavus may have intact layering in its central uplift just as several other Valles Marineris craters do. Is this a tell-tale sign that the events that built up this area were rapid enough to preserve layers beneath the surface from impact gardening? (This is the process where impacts have "stirred" the outermost crust of a celestial object with no atmosphere. On Mars, there is an atmosphere but it is very thin.) How do these layers compare to what is exposed elsewhere in Valles Marineris? This caption is based on the science rationale for the observation. Written by: HiRISE Science Team

Staring across interstellar space, the alluring Cat's Eye nebula lies three thousand light-years from Earth. A classic planetary nebula, the Cat's Eye (NGC 6543) represents a final, brief yet glorious phase in the life of a sun-like star. This nebula's dying central star may have produced the simple, outer pattern of dusty concentric shells by shrugging off outer layers in a series of regular convulsions. But the formation of the beautiful, more complex inner structures is not well understood. Seen so clearly in this sharp Hubble Space Telescope image, the truly cosmic eye is over half a light-year across. Of course, gazing into the Cat's Eye, astronomers may well be seeing the fate of our sun, destined to enter its own planetary nebula phase of evolution ... in about 5 billion years.
