There is this ascent around the merge onto 210 (I think) where, if you hit it when the sun is just starting to breach in the morning, basically immerses you in a 360 degrees Japanese watercolor landscape for a good 10 minutes. Its simply profound in the classic sense of the word.
And for the love of god dont listen to Gary; Im guessing hes never been bumper to bumper on US-95 in the middle of the desert. The only thing less enjoyable than doing that for 50+ miles at 4 miles an hour is doing it for 50+ miles at 50 miles an hour. Death becomes something familiar to the point of banal, like a second hood ornament, as the reality sets in that no matter what you do, its not going to help when some trunk driver dozes off and careens into you.
Also as a final selling point, if you the drive at dusk, you can pull over onto government access roads in the desert and stretch your legs and experience that whole landscape.
And if you do it at night, you can pull over hundreds of miles from any light pollution and _really_ dig some stars out around Death Valley national park.
