Default Ryan Browning

About Ryan:

My work stems from experience-making and interacting with virtual space in digital environments. Unlike computing, how-ever, a painting comes together slowly, with additions and subtractions of visual elements building up or emptying the space in the image over time. In recent work, I’ve thought of the process of painting as being interactive; making decisions and actions as if I’m playing the medium and its suggested terrain. Painting becomes a place to explore and resolve fragments of narrative and shadows of characters. The resulting works feign to establish a loose mythology of natural and formal origins.

Default Public Enemy

Public Enemy changed hip-hop with its blend of politically aware lyrics, dissonant beats and an inventive group dynamic. Chuck D's booming voice and complex lyrics touted black nationalism and critiqued societal inequity. Flavor Flav played the trickster/court jester. Terminator X, the DJ, spoke only with his hands. And Professor Griff and the S1Ws claimed a proto-militaristic stance. The mix made for some of rap's most exciting music.

Hailing from Roosevelt, a small town in Long Island's South Shore, Chuck D (Carlton Ridenhour) got his start in hip-hop as a radio DJ at Adelphi University's WBAU. When Def Jam records co-founder Rick Rubin heard a song called 'Public Enemy Number One' that Chuck made with friend Hank Shocklee, Rubin immediately tried to sign him to the burgeoning label.

Though Chuck was skeptical at first, he soon relented, enlisting Shocklee and his Spectrum City cohorts Keith Shocklee and Eric "Vietnam' Sadler to do production as the Bomb Squad. Chuck's idea was to create the ultimate political hip-hop group. Flavor Flav (William Drayton), Griff, Terminator X and the S1Ws soon joined the fold in what was once high-minded theater, Black Panther-inspired aethetics, edgy beats and fiercely political lyrics.

The raw beats and rhymes from the group's 1988 debut, 'Yo Bum Rush the Show,' did little to prepare rap fans for their masterpiece sophomore release, 'It Takes A Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back.' The album was powerful, cohesive and like nothing rap had produced before.

The Bomb Squad constructed walls of noise and intricate sample pastiches that were the perfect backdrop for Chuck D's forceful delivery and Flav's hyped ab-libs. 'Fight the Power,' which is on the soundtrack of Spike Lee's 1989 film 'Do the Right Thing,' stands as one of the genre's best examples of hip-hop's rebellious spirit.

Adam Yauch (MCA from the Beastie Boys) recalled the group's significance in 'Rolling Stone' magazine's 2004 feature about the 100 greatest artists of all time. (The group came in at number 44.)

"PE completely changed the game musically. No one was just putting straight-out noise and atonal synthesizers into hip-hop, mixing elements of James Brown and Miles Davis; no one in hip-hop had ever been this hard, and perhaps no one has since. They made everything else sound clean and happy, and the power of the music perfectly matched the intention of the lyrics. They were also the first rap group to really focus on making albums - you can listen to 'Nation of Millions' or 'Fear of a Black Planet' from beginning to end. They aren't just random songs tossed together."

Though the group was hailed for their music, they also endured a fair bit of controversy when critics accused some of the lyrics of 'Welcome to the Terrordome' as being anti-Semitic. (Griff was eventually asked to leave the group over statements he made.)

Still, the group endured, releasing a series of albums through '90s, two of which ('Fear of a Black Planet' and 'Apocalypse 91...The Empire Strikes Black') can be considered rap's most accomplished efforts.

Recently, Chuck D has hosted political talk radio shows and Flav has become a reality TV icon. He has also released his memoir, 'Flavor Flav: The Icon, The Memoir.'

The group was recognized at the VH1 Hip-Hop Honors in 2009.

Influenced...Paris, KRS-One, Ice Cube, X-Clan, dead prez, Immortal Technique, Ice-T, among others.

Default JoJo Uses Her Tits To Try Again of the Day

I call this “jailbait everyone wanted until she turned 18, trying to make a comeback by showing titty”….

Here’s her story….she was 16, she had a hit song, every pervert wanted to fuck her cuz she looked 12, she turned 18, everyone forgot about her, she didn’t have any other commercial success, and she did what ever unwanted white girl does: she emotionally ate…and she ended up where every fat girl with issues ends up: fucking black dudes…but not the kind of black dudes who can help her get more famous like Jay-Z, but black dudes who live in the philly projects she grew up in….

But all that’s behind her, I mean everything bit the black dude thing, cuz once you go black you never go back, cuz here she is at the BET awards letting us know she’s been doing sit ups and got a push up bra and ready for a comeback…

I wonder if the name of her next single is – “At first you don’t succeed -cuz your pedo audience moves on, get fat, fuck a black dude then do some sit-ups and try, try again….”

Default Mars Rover Curiosity in Artist's Concept, Close-up

This artist concept features NASA's Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover, a mobile robot for investigating Mars' past or present ability to sustain microbial life. Curiosity is being tested in preparation for launch in the fall of 2011.In this picture, the mast, or rover's "head," rises to about 2.1 meters (6.9 feet) above ground level, about as tall as a basketball player. This mast supports two remote-sensing instruments: the Mast Camera, or "eyes," for stereo color viewing of surrounding terrain and material collected by the arm; and, the ChemCam instrument, which is a laser that vaporizes material from rocks up to about 9 meters (30 feet) away and determines what elements the rocks are made of.NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, manages the Mars Science Laboratory Project for the NASA Science Mission Directorate, Washington.

Default Hiding in Plain Sight — The Elusive Carina Dwarf Galaxy

It’s one of the closest galaxies to Earth, but the Carina Dwarf Galaxy is so dim and diffuse that astronomers only discovered it in the 1970s. A companion galaxy of the Milky Way, this ball of stars shares features with both globular star clusters and much larger galaxies.Astronomers believe that dwarf spheroidal galaxies like the Carina Dwarf are very common in the Universe, but they are extremely difficult to observe. Their faintness and low star density mean that it is easy to simply see right through them. In this image, the Carina Dwarf appears as many faint stars scattered across most of the central part of the picture. It is hard to tell apart stars from the dwarf galaxy, foreground stars within the Milky Way and even faraway galaxies that poke through the gaps: the Carina Dwarf is a master of cosmic camouflage. The Carina Dwarf’s stars show an unusual spread of ages. They appear to have formed in a series of bursts, with quiet periods lasting several billion years in between them. It lies around 300 000 light-years from Earth, which places it further away than the Magellanic Clouds (the nearest galaxies to the Milky Way), but significantly closer to us than the Andromeda Galaxy, the closest spiral galaxy. So, despite being small for a galaxy, its proximity to Earth means that the Carina Dwarf appears quite large in the sky, just under half the size of the full Moon — albeit very much fainter. This makes it fit comfortably within the field of view of ESO’s Wide Field Imager, an instrument designed for making observations of large parts of the sky. Although this image in itself is not so striking, it is likely the best image of the Carina Dwarf Galaxy to date. The image was made using observations from the Wide Field Imager on the MPG/ESO 2.2-meter telescope at La Silla, and from the Victor M. Blanco 4-meter telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory.

Default 2011 WSOP: Ben Lamb Wins Bracelet, Big Stack in $10k Six-Max

Meet the recently rebranded Ben Lambeer.

The problem with the last name “Lamb” is it’s tough to sound like a badass stone-cold killer with it. It’s probably why Bill Laimbeer put “beer” at the end of his name. Bill Lamb (or Laim, whatever) doesn’t strike fear and ire in the hearts of men. Bill Laimbeer though instantly turned into the toughest white guy in the NBA. So given how much Ben Lamb is epicly crushing and pwning this year’s WSOP (it’s so so sick, one time!), we will refer to him as Ben LambeerTM from this stage forward.

On with the updates.

:: Event #42 ($10,000 PLO) – Four players returned, and, just a week after runner-upping the $3k PLO event, Ben Lambeer emerged as the winner, banking$814,436. The win moved Lambeer (see what a difference that makes?) to first in the 2011 WSOP Player of the Year rankings, a good 65 points ahead of Phil Hellmuth. Lambeer defeatedSami “LarsLuzak” Kelopuro ($503,173) heads-up for the title. Get full results here.

:: Event #43 ($1,500 NLH) - This event is like Rasputin. It just won’t go away. Down to heads-up,Nachman Berlin has a 3-to-1-ish chip advantage over Andre Akkari.

:: Event #44 ($2,500 Razz!) - The super-fun Razz! event is also down to heads-up play, with Stephen Su (1,655,000) ahead of Rep Porter (1,080,000). See who pulls out the Razz! title later today.

:: Event #45 ($1,000 NLH) - All eyes were on Phil Hellmuth, as he made yet another deep run in another event, ultimately bowing out in 28th place ($10,560). A total of 21 return today, with Canuck Jonathan Driscoll as big stack with1,247,000. He’s followed by Kenneth Griffin (1,133,000). Antonio Esfandiari is fourth overall (663,000). Get full chip counts here.

:: Event #46 ($10,000 NLH Six-Handed) – Well, this event was a success. A total of 474 entered the $10k Six-Max, creating a first place prize of$1,158,481 (the WSOP’s first $1M+ prize of the year). Recent WPT winner Alan Sternberg ended as chip leader, stacked at 260,600. He’s followed by Kevin Saul with 242,600. And in third overall is Ben Lambeer with 223,000. Keeping up with the big name big stacks, in fourth through seventh are Joe Cada (208,800), Mike Sowers (203,900), Jake Cody (198,900), and McLean Karr (196,800). For all of youBjorn Verbakel fans out there, he’s got 143,000. Get full chip counts here.

:: Event #47 ($2,500 Omaha/7Cs 8oB) – The final event of the day brought in 450 players, creating a first place prize of$255,959. With 201 surviving to Day 2, Abe Mosseri is chip leader, stacked at 64,200. He’s followed byKevin Iacofano with 47,200. Get full chip counts here.

Default Civil War Photographer

Today's picture shows Civil War Photographer Sam Cooley. You can see two photographic wagons and, most interestingly, one of his cameras.

I was not able to find much information on Sam Cooley. Given how his name is prominently featured on the wagons, I am inclined to believe that he did not work for Mathew Brady.
