Stage Une (1) was completed today and won by a Belgian of all people.

Will Contador win another Tour or can the Schleck brothers mount a challenge?

Bob Wong, the floor is yours.

Contador is the obvious overall winner. He would have to suffer a serious accident (much greater than the one he was involved in today, in which he lost over a minute) before anybody else could even think about having a chance.

Andy Schleck is a total fag and absolutely does not have the character needed to win a major tour. He can whine all he wants about losing a chain, but the fact is he had chain problems about four times during last year's tour. Learn to ride a bike bro.

I'm a little pissed about today's stage. A week or two ago I would have bet Gilbert without thinking twice. He won Liege-Bastogne-Liege, La Fleche Wallone, and the Amstel Gold Race this spring, an amazing feat that has only been done once before, by a guy who was on hecka drugs.

Philippe Gilbert is also most likely on hecka drugs, as you can tell by his pockles and herpes sores.

But then his team has been targeted heavily in drug stings in the past couple weeks. I've been under the assumption that Gilbert's drug supply would have dried up, and I dropped him from my fantasy teams. My pick for today's stage winner and the first wearer of the yellow jersey became Thor Hushovd, who finished third today. But Gilbert must have a drug stockpile or a secondary supplier, and he is fast as fuck.

My picks in one fantasy league:

GC: Alberto Contador
Andy Schleck
Cadel Evans

Green Jersey: Mark Cavendish
KoM: Damiano Cunego
Young Rider: Robert Gesink

This league doesn't allow substitutions during the race, and I kind of just threw those names together to get some picks in under the deadline. I may have made some mistakes with the sprint and mountain jersey picks because I wasn't super clear about the scoring. I may or may not get stage win points for those guys, and if I don't I'm a little fucked. I don't expect Cavendish to win the green jersey or even hold it for more than a couple days, and Cunego is a very outside shot for the polka-dot jersey. But I expect that their stage finishes will be better than the eventual winners of those competitions. It doesn't really matter, as this league has pretty minimal prizes.

You can still get in a fantasy league for this year's tour: http://nbcfantasy.stats.com/cycling/index.asp

They reset all the stats after Stage 3, so you have a couple days to figure out their system. I haven't really started fucking with it much because I've been concentrating on another one. I'll do a writeup on that one after they finish calculating the scoring for today's stage and a writeup of that nbc thing tomorrow or Monday.

http://road.cc/ is a British site that has another fantasy league. In this one, you are given a budget of 175 points and need to pick a team of nine riders: A leader, a sprinter, a climber, two all-rounders, and four domestiques. Riders are given values that range from three points for some Basque guy who you never heard of to 40 for the top studs. You're allowed two substitutions after each stage, so a sharp guy can do well. First prize is a pretty sweet bike, so I'm paying a little more attention to this one.

My picks prior to today's stage:

Team leader: Tejay Van Garderen - cost 21 points
A cheap pick to free up some budget space for other riders. I didn't expect any of the GC contenders to be high up on the stage finish today, so my big scoring opportunities were in the sprinter and all-rounder categories. Tejay is a guy who can ride quite well in anger, so there was a chance that he could have snuck into a late break as well. Cadel Evans was obviously the big surprise in this category today, and either I'll trade for him tonight or wait to see how BMC goes in the team time trial tomorrow.

Sprinter: Thor Hushovd - cost 37 points
I'm very happy with this pick. Thor is a strong guy and would have loved to trade the rainbow world champion's jersey for yellow today. He won't be contesting the big field sprints and will instead be part of the leadout train for Tyler Farrar, but he's a great finisher on a difficult run-in like we had today. I'll be making some changes in this category once I get a handle on how teams are contesting the intermediate sprints. Farrar and Greipel looked great in that respect today, while Cavendish and Petacchi just royally fucked it all up.

Climber: Rigoberto Uran Uran - cost 15 points
Another cost-saving pick, particularly since there were no intermediate mountain points available today and this league doesn't award mountain points earned on stage finishes. That said, I think he is tremendously undervalued and I might hang onto him for a while.

All-Rounders: Tom Boonen - cost 33 points
Thomas Voeckler - cost 25 points
I could have bought Gilbert in this category, but at a cost of 40 points. As I mentioned above, I figured he might be suffering from a lack of drugs. Tom Boonen is a favorite of mine. I liked to see him pick up a couple points in the intermediate sprint when he kept fighting and some guys in front of him had sat up. And you've got to love a guy who gets caught using drugs once every year or two, but only recreational cocaine. I picked Voeckler because his team is based out of the region that we raced in today and he knows the area well, having won the 2010 French national championship there. He was up there in the final kilometers today, pushing the pace after the peloton split and following all the right wheels up until Fabian Cancellara's bizarre behavior handed the stage to Philippe Gilbert. I'm fairly happy with both of these picks today, but I shouldn't have second-guessed myself.

Domestiques: Linus Gerdemann - cost 14 points
Laurens Ten Dam - cost 14 points
Lars Bak - cost 9 points
Yaroslav Popovych - cost 7 points
I picked a couple of expensive domestiques, both because I think they have a good chance to do something and because I should be able to do a straight trade for another domestique who gets into a lucky breakaway and suddenly rises in value. Also, Laurens Ten Dam has been making me lol all spring because every time I see him he looks more and more like a hobo.

Seven of my riders made the front of the split, with only poor Rigoberto limping in 1:20 down and Laurens Ten Dam somehow managing to lose almost seven minutes. I think he got caught behind the crash and decided to sneak off into the shrubbery and smoke a bowl while things were getting sorted out. Thor Hushovd and Linus Gerdemann were both the highest placed on their teams, with the kind of crews that could put them into the yellow jersey by winning tomorrow's team time trial. Tejay Van Garderen finished well also and his HTC team has been excellent in the TTT all year, winning at the Giro and placing third earlier at Tirreno-Adriatico.

I'm going to guess that tomorrow's winning time will be around 24:40 and there are maybe four or five teams that are capable of finishing in under 25 minutes. HTC, Garmin-Cervelo, Leopard-Trek, and Liquigas-Cannondale should contend for the stage win and yellow jersey. BMC, Radio Shack, and Sky should be alright, and Contador may whip his Saxobank team hard to limit his early losses to some of the other favorites.

My goal is to make a couple swaps to gain some more riders who are highly placed riders on those teams. With that in mind, I traded Ten Dam for Maciej Paterski, the highest placed Liquigas rider, and Voeckler for David Millar so that I will end up with the top two riders on GC if Garmin-Cervelo can win tomorrow.

Fantasy Cycling is the new god...I may have to start making spreadsheets.

Gonna do all my research this year and then take my shot next summer.

Garmin-Cervelo in 24:48, with BMC, Sky, Leopard-Trek, HTC, and Radio Shack all coming in under the 25 minute mark. My team ended up with two riders getting stage win points and in the first two places on GC. I run good.
