Yeah I've told the story a few times. Got hired on when I was 18 through some temp agency, at the time I was literally stealing top ramen to survive and all of my earthly possessions had been stolen by crack heads (the ones I shared the living room floor with)

Long story short- well, Hoser nailed it more or less. I was actually one of the first dozen or so netflix employees (not counting the headquarters/HR spot in Scotts Valley, which had like 20 or so people working at the time) and when I first started, all we had was a few rows of dvd's in plastic sleeves scattered around on the floor of a very small office. We had rented like 1/4th of a small office mind you, only one person had a key card and he, being a huge pot head, had a tendency to be late as fuck and somehow no one ended up getting paid for the time we spent sitting around waiting for him to get back from santa cruz (like a 30 mile drive damn near) I had to hunt around with my head down for hours at a time to find the movies people rented, then check them out, package and mail them and check the returned movies in.

I didn't think the company was going anywhere to be honest, it just didn't seem like it would catch on. Within 5 months there were over 60 employees at my site and we had the entire office BUILDING rented out and suddenly everyone was excited because the company had been offering 10k shares of stock for all permanent employees after the 6 month (give or take) temp period was over.

The rest is as Hoser said, I thought I made myself valuable but actually I made myself more of a liability than anything. Shit happens.

Oh, and I used to jerk it in the conference room to playboy dvd's on my lunch break.
