you keep on going on about the fact that the only thai girls that will give you the time of day are peasants and that the rest of them wont give you the time of day because you dont speak thai.
so why havent you made any effort to learn the language ?
you have spent what 4,5,6 years or more living there so surely it would make things easier if you could speak some thai. at the very least it would give you a better chance with all the hot thai girls who keep on passing you off to their peasant friends.
if i was living in any non english speaking country for a long period of time i would definately be making an effort to learn the language so i dont understand why you dont bother.
because the thai language is an abomination against logic, and because thai people will literally sit there and make you re-pronounce words for 15-20 minutes while sadistically shrugging their shoulders at every wrong inflection until you brute-force your way into compliance with their verbal expectations.
i spent, not joking, 10 minutes in the back of a parked cab running through every conceivable permutation of soft/hard vowel sounds while the driver stared out the window (with the meter running) waiting patiently to shake his head after each try.
finally one of the staff at my apartment building came out, saw *immediately* what the driver was up to, and said "ah-sawk bts", at which point the driver miraculously understood exactly where i wanted to go and that was that.
thai people are the most passive aggressive lunatics on the face of the earth, its their principle social dynamic with people who are not thai.
because they fucking hate all of us for treating them like living sex toys and their country like a sex-themed amusement ride.
i have never had any problems with taxis when i was there but i would always ask in english. mind you i have a much smaller sample size than you. tuk tuk drivers on the other hand they are all cunts and i would always avoid them.
how long did you end up spending over there ? i never got the impression that they all hate us but i guess i could have been to drunk to notice/care.
100% in bangkok; the last 6 months were effectively illegal (expired visa), so it was very important to avoid situations where id have to present credentials, such as checking into a hotel. that put the kebosh on any trips to the islands for example. which sucked. but i was also working the entire time i was there so it wasnt really a huge problem for me personally. if i wasnt working id have probably entertained the idea of making visa runs etc and keeping everything above the boards, but ultimately i wasnt in vacation/adventure mode, plus those visa runs are fucking expensive and time consuming and exponentially more so if you want to end up someplace that isnt a sweltering third world shithole.
yeah sucks that you didnt get a chance to see the islands. definately worth a visit if you ever find yourself back there. i know its possible to get 90 days on arrival if you go to the thai embassy before you leave but have never needed one myself. did you get in much trouble at the airport for overstaying or it it just a case of paying a fine and you are on your way ?
there is a daily fine for overstays that goes up to about $500 US. there is never any hassle at the airport. the worst case is they put a red stamp in your passport indicating you overstayed, which can impact an attempt to get another entry visa for up to 12 months or something.
but once you get to passport control at the airport, its a question, an answer, a smile, you fork over the baht, fill out a form, and youre on your way.
the problem is that if that convo took place anywhere but the airport, id end up in an immigration control situation, which is (no exaggeration) a huge metal cage filled with nigerians and iranians.
the odds of getting TB are only marginally slimmer there than in jail, and a typical stay is around 72 hours.
the 90 day visa.. i forget the details but i remember it being a very easy thing to say 'fuck that noise' to. the immigration bureaucracy in thailand is second in sadism only to the russian ZAGS.
on top of all that, i went there with every intention of starting a small business there and using that to bootstrap a work visa through.
a great plan that got thailanded to its gook face the second i sat down with a thai lawyer to find out what it would require.
