About Ellen:

Ellen was born in Markham Ontario where she took to shaping three dimensional forms naturally at a young age. To Ellen sculpting has always been about life, biological narratives and cultural statements. The tedious hours of labor act as the mysterious foundation from which each sculptures’ personality springs forth.

In 2007 Ellen completed her post secondary education with a degree in Biological Anthropology and Art Critique from McMaster University. She had already started Creatures from El in 2005 and upon graduation plunged into it full time, never looking back.

Each of Ellen’s sculptures are handmade and painted with no more tools than fingers and a paint brush. By virtue of this primal process, each creation is completely unique and produced in a fluid and intuitive manner. The process begins with a handmade metal armature over which light weight clay is sculpted. The painting is done with acrylic or oil pigments and the embedded eyes are glass or acrylic. When complete the whole piece is glazed to intensify colour and strength. With inspiration derived from animal physiology and a love of the fantastic, grotesque and absurd, each sculpture is unique and personable. The immensely detailed craftsmanship is rich and thoughtful and never molded or replicated.

Hello World! My name is Gandalf; I think my Mom named me that more because of the whole “You shall not pass!” thing instead of being all grey and wizardy and stuff.

Anyway! My little brother Malcolm was the Daily Kitten on June 16th, 2012. I was all “hey! I was a cute kitten, I should be a pinup too!”. So, here I am at my foster home, before my Mom adopted me. That was six years ago, wow… I’m all about snoring loudly when I sleep, playing with the fuzzy stick, making you rub my tummy when you cross my path, and harassing birds. And I love my Mom more than anything in the world. And my brothers. And my sister too, I suppose.

Apparently, I’m a “special needs” kitty, whatever that means. I have something called epilepsy, and sometimes I shake on the floor and funny stuff comes out of my mouth, but I’m always OK afterwards. My Mom gives me a hug and a kiss and some water, and it’s all better. The other cats get concerned as well! There’s not much I can do about it, but luckily, it doesn’t happen too often.
