i also had a fine evening.
started off at
http://www.yelp.com/biz/han-bat-restaurant-chicago. wasn't feeling too adventurous, so i just got the brisket oxtail soup. soup was ridiculously simple. served as only broth, brisket and noodles, then you put in some green onions, salt, pepper and chilisauce. kimchi, both cabbage and turnips, and tea were complimentary. everything was very simple, authentic (i can only assume) and awesome.
after leaving the korean place, which didnt serve booze, we went to
http://www.chicagobrauhaus.com/. possibly the most surreal bar ive been in. a single, large room, jam-packed with tables. obviously austro-german styled, with a bar on the side and a small stage in one corner. a german beer hall, essentially. the place was jampacked, brimming with every white demographic imaginable, from 17 year old hipster kids to 80 year old german people two steps from wearing lederhosen and yodeling gear.
there was a bizarre band on the stage, fronted by a ~65 yo german dude with a mullet (though he was pretty much bald on top) wearing stereotypical german attire. he played an acoustic guitar and did vocals. two old german men, rotund, stolid-faced and white haired, one on drums and one playing an electric accordian/keyboard, were at his sides. they would come out for 3-4 song sets. they would vary the sets, with one set being traditional german polkastyle stuff, the next set being hip hop, the next set being classic rock, the next set going back to the polka, the next set being shit like britney spears.
people were dancing in a small area in front of the stage (i obv abstained), and the beers were ordered in either half liters or full liters. i was taking long, hearty draughts from my liters of wheat beer.
after the brauhaus i dropped off first the jewish poet, then the russojewuruguayanbrokenfootedcoffeemarketer, and my buddy mike and i went to the local 4 am bar and closed it down. i vaguely remember driving him out to the airport, then i came home and passed out.
i woke up today cursing the controversial exit strategy adopted by the kimchi and wheat beer.
