Default The Madea Factor: Tyler Perry On His Winning Formula

Filed under: Movies, Interviews, Celeb Updates, Entertainment

Tyler Perry is up and ready to roll on a sunny California day as he knocks out a battery of media chores for his latest movie, 'Madea's Big Happy Family,' at Beverly Hills' posh Four Seasons hotel.

A crack team of handlers -- consisting of image makers and secret-service-like security detail -- are at his beck and call as journalists and media personalities are ushered in and out of his interview chamber.

At first glance, he seems to be in good spirits. He should be. His money making alter-ego Mabel "Madea" Simmons is in rare form in his latest flick, a critic-proof comedy romp that will surely continue his winning streak at box office dominance.

In true form, Mr. Perry (as some young studio staffers are commanded to refer to him) is ready to throw his interviewers through a loop when out of nowhere the loud and ornery voice of Madea appears to be yelling out catch-phrases a mile a minute -- thanks to a handheld device he has that threatens to "punch the hell out of you" with the push of a button.

"I wanted to bring her with me," he joked. "So ask her anything you want."

A direct question about his "formula" seems to catch Perry a little off guard. Eleven movies released in six years and grossing nearly $500 million, combined, at the North American box office is something no other director -- black or white -- has accomplished.

"The formula?," he pondered. "I never thought much about the formula as much as I'm a workaholic. I like to work. I like to be busy. I like to keep moving and as long as I'm giving people what they want, then I'm in a good position. And i think that's what makes it work. There's a huge audience that I've built long before I ever did a movie who are waiting for the next thing, so that's pretty exciting to me."And a cottage industry he has become; From clever celebrity stunt casting in the films, to the sold-out, national tours of his stage plays, and the two top-rated TV sitcoms, Perry rules the roost in a niche he literally carved out for himself.

"I noticed it on the road," he revealed. "There were thousands and thousands of people packing theaters to see the live shows. And it was sold out everywhere and I was trying to find a way to reach more people. So I thought film is the way to go. Because what people want, they want positivity, they want to be uplifted and they want to be encouraged. No matter what color you are, you want to laugh a little to help get through your days. So I think that's what's happening here. And I think that's what Madea does so well."

Of the near dozen movies Perry has produced, the pistol-packing, pot smoking, bible verse-butchering, plus-sized senior citizen stars in and steals the show in six of them.

To date, even with many mainstream movie critics panning them, flicks such as 'Madea Goes To Jail,' 'Madea's Family Reunion' and 'I Can Do Bad All By Myself,' has raked in unpredicted millions.

In the beginning of it all, Perry said people kept referring to him as his alter ego, but once he started putting his name out there more, people got it.

"I was having a battle with her in the beginning, but we're straight."

And why does he think Madea is such a force of nature?

"Everybody, I don't care who you are, somebody knows or had a grandmother like that -- who will set you straight, hit you on the backside when you were doing something wrong.

"And that's what people can relate to because she's missed, she's not around anymore," he continued.

In the new film, Madea jumps into action when her niece Shirley, played by veteran actress Loretta Devine, seeks to reunite and reconcile her three adult children after getting bad news about her health. Her children -- played by Bow Wow, Shannon Kane and Natalie Dessell -- are are having many family issues of their own. The flick also stars Cassi David, David Mann, Tamela Mann, Lauren London, Teyana Taylor, Rodney Perry and Isaiah Mustafa.

"It's a different kind of storytelling," Perry explained. "I mean this is about family. The other stories that I've told is about relationships ... this is about family coming together, and finding out what's wrong, why can't [they] sit down, why can't [they]love one another. So it's a good, fun, inspirational movie."

With all he's amassed over the past five years, it can be easy to lose sense of self. Not for Perry, who when asked about his sense of self, said "just understanding at 41, there is a God."

"There is no way this could be happening without it," he continued. "And knowing that that kind of expression, that kind of love, that kind of faith dwells inside of me and makes the man I am. And as long as I stay true to that, that is who I am."

'Madea's Big Happy Family' is in theaters now.

Six Degrees of Tyler Perry
In just three years, Tyler Perry has become the toast of Hollywood. Could you name another director black or white who can boast of having released six feature movie projects within a three year period? Nope. Not only did the New Orleans native write all of the storylines for the films, he starred in four. Combined, five of the films have grossed upwards of $250 million worldwide, some within budgets below $6 million. And with the major money train also comes associating with some of the biggest names in and out of the entertainment business. BlackVoices.com takes an introspective look at how a former homeless man turned chit'lin circuit theater czar has connections to the likes of Michael Jackson, Denzel Washington, Whitney Houston and Will Smith, to name a few. Check out Six Degrees of Tyler Perry.

Default Sissi

Location: Prague, Czech Republic

I always wanted a cat and I found my kitty in the pet-shop. It was few moths after my dog died (November 2002). I just were there, watching the rabbits and one old lady came there, I never saw her again. She came there with a box and inside there were two kittens, and this little princess looked at me and started to meow very loud and she just wanted me, soooo… next day she were mine. It was totally “love at first sight”. Now she eight years old but she looks just the same like the first day. And she is really is a princess with an awesome personality. And I’m just happy I found her or she found me!

Default Iowa, Nevada Move Forward With Online Poker Bills

Despite moves by the U.S. Government to crack down on the online poker industry, two states continue to move forward with legislation.

In Iowa, the State Senate passed a measure that requires the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission to study internet poker and its effects. The vote on the study, which passed by a 38-12 vote in the Iowa Senate, would analyze several areas of the online poker industry that concern legislators, including the effects of unregulated internet poker play, consumer protection, responsible gaming, and regulatory recommendations.

The bill now goes to the House for its consideration. If it were passed in the House, the study would need to be completed by December 1.

The arguments for and against the proposed Iowa internet poker law are similar to what has been heard in other states like New Jersey, California, and Florida. Those in favor of legislation talk about the millions of dollars that can be raised for state coffers. Those not in favor, especially in Iowa, are worried about expanding gambling inside the state’s borders, where 14 state-approved and six Indian reservation casinos are located. The state also offers a lottery for its constituents.

Meanwhile, the Nevada General Assembly seems to be ready to look at the internet gaming question. Last week, AB 258, the bill sponsored by Assemblyman William Horne that would set up a regulated and taxed online gaming structure in the state of Nevada, cleared a committee vote. The next move for the bill would be debate in the Nevada General Assembly, although a vote has yet to be set.

AB 258 passed out of committee with several alterations. One of them – to create an intrastate poker framework rather than an interstate or global operation – was made to give the bill a better chance at passing. The change was made following negotiations between Horne and Governor Brian Sandoval, the newly elected Republican leader of Nevada.

In a letter sent to Horne, Governor Sandoval expressed support for Horne’s ideas, but was concerned that a global online poker operation would conflict with Federal law.

The passage of AB 258 out of committee came before the firestorm of what has become known as “Black Friday,” however. The April 15 action by the Southern District of New York, in which the founders of PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker, and Absolute Poker were indicted on several charges, has caused turmoil in Nevada politics and business.

Following the indictment, two Nevada casino companies, Wynn Resorts and Fertitta Interactive, ended agreements with PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker, respectively, to enter the online poker industry.

In the political realm, the actions of PokerStars, which lobbied aggressively for the passage of AB 258, have brought considerable heat on several politicians. PokerStars, through a political action committee (PAC) called ReelPAC, made campaign contributions to several top political campaigns in the state, including those of Governor Sandoval and his November 2010 opponent, Rory Reid.

PokerStars also contributed heavily to several top Nevada PACs. Overall, the contributions by PokerStars amounted to $272,000. Those contributions have since been returned by the respective campaigns; what effects the actions of PokerStars in its lobbying efforts for AB 258 will have are unknown.

Default Online Poker Black Friday(TM): Separating Myths from Facts

Time to start cleaning up some of the myths and redefining what Black Friday is all about...

The Department of Justice (DoJ) left a Chicxulub crater on the U.S. online poker industry on April 15th.

And when something like that hits, there’s typically a lot of misinformation to sift through in the rubble.

We plan to get back to regular poker news reporting this week, but before we do, here’s the biggest myths/misconceptions we’re hearing about the events of Black FridayTM. We’ll continue adding to this post as needed.

Myth: The DoJ has declared war on online poker.

Fact: The DoJ has not declared war on online poker. TheSUCKINGHOBBITDICKSSouthernSUCKINGHOBBITDICKSDistrict of New York (SDNY) and DoJ spent years building a money laundering and bank fraud case against PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker, and AP/UB. If the allegations are true, then the Big 3 operators purchased/invested in at least part of a bank and miscoded their transactions to dupe banks into processing non-gaming related charges. In bringing these indictments, the Government will likely realize a financial windfall of over a billion dollars. That’s what happened on April 15th. There was no war against online poker.

Myth: The DoJ busted PokerStars, Full Tilt, and AP/UB to help clear the way for the U.S. Government to regulate online poker.

Fact: The indictments against PokerStars, Full Tilt, AP/UB happened completely independently of any legislative actions happening at the state or Federal level.

Had Senator Harry Reid pushed the Reid BillTM through in December of 2010, these indictments still would’ve occurred. The only way these indictments wouldn’t have occurred is if Stars/Tilt hadn’t (allegedly) purchased/persuaded/investedSUCKINGHOBBITDICKSin a bank and (allegedly) miscoded transactions and laundered money.

If you need more info on how many levels deep the sites went to allegedly commit fraud, read this.

Myth: Your 65,000+ electronic letter submissions to our elected officials helped quickly spur the DoJ into striking deals with Stars/Tilt to unfreeze funds.

Fact: Stars/Tilt eagerly cooperating with the DoJ, as well as angry calls from Federal officials to the SDNY to unfreeze accounts so they could get their money out, is why the agreements happened so quickly.

The PPA tried to take some credit here (likely to keep themselves relevant and your donations coming in) and should be applauded for their Action Center (which should be FRONT & CENTER on the homepage and not something we needed to Google search to find–face palm) and making it as easy as possible for you to voice yourSUCKINGHOBBITDICKSdispleasureSUCKINGHOBBITDICK Swith our elected officials, but those electronic letters had absolutely no bearing on the DoJ agreements with Stars and Tilt.

Myth: Once online poker is regulated in the United States, we’ll all get to play again right away.

Fact: If a bill is passed at the Federal level tomorrow, it’ll be at least a year until anyone is playing in the U.S. on a major, regulated SUCKINGHOBBITDICKSoperator.

There will be a regulatory process/structure period, as well asSUCKINGHOBBITDICKSlicensingSUCKINGHOBBITDICKSper iod, as well as ramp up period for licensees to launch. Further, there are about 15 states where you can’t even play subscription-based poker right now–so your state will also have to opt-in as well. It’s going to be awhile.

Myth: You can safely play poker just as you did on Stars and Tilt on other U.S.-facing sites right now.

Fact: This one is partly true, with some caveats.

As some of the less popular sites (as of two weeks ago) become more popular (as of today) they too will experience similar issues with payment processing (it’s not going to get easier, that’s for sure), and could eventually be shut down, or face other scenarios that will keep you from getting money out. We’re not saying don’t take your business to Merge or Bodog or Doyle’s Room, but if the hammer comes down, the chance of you getting your money out will be something close to nil, unlike with Stars, Tilt, and presumably AP/UB. How come? Those smaller operators have significantly less international presence (Bodog) and money in the bank to facilitate a mass evacuation of cash-outs.

Further, don’t expect any of these sites to reach any level of critical mass like Stars and Tilt were able to achieve. The DoJ indictments will scare away most of the casual players, and none of these sites have the money or desire to bankroll TV productions (like the PokerStars Big Game or Poker After Dark) that will reach and attract new players. Not to mention, well, there are not a lot of TV shows willing to accept online poker money (or programming, or advertising) right now.

Myth: This is the end of the road for PokerStars and Full Tilt.

Fact: This myth we hear more from people outside of the industry than within, but it’s still something we’ve heard enough to address.

Stars was doing only 25-30% of the business in the States. Tilt was around 45%. Clearly it’ll impact Tilt more (bye-bye 100+ random Red Pros) but both will survive and continue making money hand over fist in Europe and other emerging markets.

As for AP/UB, this may be the end of the road. We’ll have to wait and see.

We’ll continue adding to this post as needed and welcome your myth/fact suggestions in the comments.
