The problem with the repairs is this- he told me (and even cut a check for $150 to date) that he would pay HALF for ANYTHING I needed to do to the car while it was under my care and presumably he would take over someday. That half was a minimum, contingent on the fact that eventually he would probably get the most use out of the car.

I probably do have it in writing, and at the very least I have a copy of the check he cut me, additionally I have text messages saved where he does agree. On top of that, in court, the guy is a marine, he would never lie under oath.
Self-reliance and independence should be your primary focus, always. This is not a world where you can rely on people. But you should have worked that out decades ago.
I dunno about pursuing it. Seems laced with negatives. Sunken costs etc. Throwing good emotions after bad.
