A meme, described by Richard Dawkins, consists of any unit of cultural information, such as a practice or idea, that gets transmitted verbally or by repeated action from one mind to another.
I use the figure to shape stories, emotions and alternate realities into a tightly uniform surface of paint, creating images that draw from, build upon and illustrate our cultural history, the transcendental otherworldly state of our imagined selves. I use the figure to convey the emptiness of a night, the blue solitude of being submerged, our personal relationship with the external world, to detail and flesh out inner fantasies of self, captured in a prism of oil glazes. For me the human form must refer to something over and beyond its manifest subject.
The paintings start as a meme, an area of interest that I want to develop, reinterpret and elaborate upon. I sketch out the composition, then photograph the subject, painting from a combination of photographs, sketches and my inner eye. The surface is built up with thin layers of transparent color, wiped, brushed or dabbed, until the painting is almost surreal or hyper real and intensely colorful. The paintings are oil on canvas.
