simply telling your okie architects to eliminate gables from their repertoire would cut the amount of property damage in half, adding about 1k worth of simpson hardware to the average home would but it even further, and using california style shear nailing schedules for your sheathing would cut it even further
People will try to act like it was luck or a miracle or an act of god that the houses at the top of this photo were spared and the tornado just missed them. The fact is that if they were that close to that much destruction they surely were exposed to very extreme winds and flying debris. You know what kept these houses from failing? Hip roofs and brick sheathing. I'm not saying that those houses that are destroyed at the bottom of the photo necessarily had gable roofs. Sometimes shit just happens and your house is going to get destroyed. What I am saying is that a properly designed and constructed house is capable of withstanding some pretty fucking serious wind conditions.
So then look at this google search of "moore oklahoma homes" with only images from last month or older. There are a lot of fucking gables in those pictures, and I believe that the architects who designed those homes for that area are fucking criminals.
