The Sleeping Beauty galaxy may appear peaceful at first sight but it is actually tossing and turning. In an unexpected twist, recent observations have shown that the gas in the outer regions of this photogenic spiral is rotating in the opposite direction from all of the stars! Collisions between gas in the inner and outer regions are creating many hot blue stars and pink emission nebula. The above image was taken by the Hubble Space Telescope in 2001 and released in 2004. The fascinating internal motions of M64, also cataloged as NGC 4826, are thought to be the result of a collision between a small galaxy and a large galaxy where the resultant mix has not yet settled down.

Two of the game’s most respected online grinders captured their first respective WSOP bracelets on Tuesday.

In Event #20 ($1,000 NLH), Jason Somerville beat a field of 3,175 to capture his first bracelet and bank $493,091. He defeated Yahar Darian ($305,009) heads-up for the title. This event had another near-miss with a woman winning a bracelet, as 46 year-old Diana Allen, a woman, finished seventh ($63,493). Crazy as shit Lex Veldhuis just missed the final table, finishing eleventh ($28,517).

Somerville joins Brian Rast in becoming the second PokerVT pro in a week to win a bracelet. Apparently there’s some Good JuJuTM for VT pros who appeared on This Week In Poker. In related news, we’re working on getting a TWiP-ish version of TWiP going again from the WSOP soon.

In Event #21 ($10,000 Seven Card Stud), Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grospellier broke through and captured his first bracelet, banking $331,639. He defeated Steven Landfish ($204,924) heads-up for the title.

ElkY has proven to be far from a typical two-year wonder. This is ElkY’s ninth major cash of 2011 and third victory (he’s also won two EPT High Rollers events). The win gives him nearly $8M in career tournament earnings and over $1.6M for 2011. We’re having a difficult time computing all of this, as ElkY is French, yet, he’s so often victorious. He’s like the Michael Jordan in a country full of LeBron Jameses.

Today's picture was taken in 1864, and shows a group of emancipated slaves reading. In some of the other pictures this week, some have wondered why the slaves were dressed so well, and why the owner would have pictures made. The pictures were taken AFTER Butler took New Orleans and emancipated the slaves. The slave children had come under the care of an organization that intended to educate them. In fact, the pictures we have been looking at were sold to raise funds for the project.


In this picture we see three of the children featured earlier this week . . . Charley Taylor, Rebecca Huger, and Rosina Downs. The black man in the picture is also a former slave, and his name is Wilson Chinn. I have the following information on Wilson.



WILSON CHINN is about 60 years old, he was "raised" by Isaac Howard of Woodford County, Kentucky. When 21 years old he was taken down the river and sold to Volsey B. Marmillion, a sugar planter about 45 miles above New Orleans. This man was accustomed to brand his negroes, and Wilson has on his forehead the letters "V. B. M." Of the 210 slaves on this plantation 105 left at one time and came into the Union camp. Thirty of them had been branded like cattle with a hot iron, four of them on the forehead, and the others on the breast or arm.

I have been a cave diver since 1997, and i`ve always been amazed by the natural beauty and uniqueness that you can find in the Cenotes of the Yucatan Peninsula, México. They are spectacular in many ways, some of them very obvious like the enormous stalactites and stalagmites, crystal clear water and the mystery and history mixed in the middle of the jungle. But there is also a more subtle beauty in them, hide in their unique colors and details that are not easily spotted by diving or snorkeling in them. So that is my goal, to capture the fantastic details hidden in this natural wonders... (This photo and caption were submitted to the 2011 National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest.)
