No one really wants to use apple software to erase apple hardware I would hope. Booting into a linux live cd on a mac you want to clean seems counterproductive. Under the control of the same firmware how can anyone be sure the partition tables you're seeing is accurate? You aren't ever going to be SURE your HD is clean until it is out of the old machine. DU=Disk Utility I use it to format GUID/HFS+ hard drives. It's the only program I know of which will do much of anything with apple hard drives. Known safe windows PC=a PC built from scratch using sanitized parts and has NEVER seen one second of time with access to the internet.
With respect to why I'd do what I did- Dban is awesome but I have never once gotten it to work on a macintosh. Even though Dban operates from RAM independent of the OS, I still can not get my mac to boot the iso, not even after converting it to dmg, and I don't mean converting to dmg with disk utility, I used dmg converter. Held C when booting the whole9. Nothing. Ever.
Dban only works on windows formatted hard drives I am sure of that now. So if you convert your apple hard drive to ex-fat (windows) format with disk utility you can then hook the hard drive up to any windows pc and boot dban and rock and roll. Dban will eradicate ANYTHING on that fucker including the USB stick it's contained on. Once dban is up and running pull the usb asap.
Cleaning the SuperDrive caches gets tricky. You cannot easily do it, the key really becomes is it worth your time to do it? Remember the cache exists primarily to store data about simple things like names of dvds, table of contents for the last movie you watched etc. For the paranoid this is a little hotbed of apple spyware, for the other 99% it's really great and useful. If you want to clear it, I might be able to help, but it's not worth your time IMO. I went through my tin foil hat phase and now say fuck it, if feds are coming tomorrow let me sleep well tonight. I don't care anymore. Apple saves much of what you do online anyway.
Boot your laptop holding cmnd r and it will take you to "recovery mode" which in translation is a connection between a ROM portion of your hard drive (so they say- but it cannot be removed, and dban hasn't gotten rid of it, so what the fuck) and apple servers. It's fast, take a minute or two to load, and suddenly you are booted into "Mac OSX Base System" (this works after dban wipe and with NO OS installed whatsoever mind you) which in actuality is the backbone for osx lion. Backbone meaning- this filesystem is nearly an OS, Lion just adds 4gigs of crap to it (remote desktop, shitloads of languages they KNOW no one uses- which begs the question, why force all this language software on people who will never use it? Is it then REALLY language software? Seems illogical to me at least) and presto you have osx lion. What's weird is- OSX Base System persists after ANYTHING you can throw at the machine. Cmnd-R ALWAYS boots into this file system, no matter what!
What I'm getting at- there are secrets to apple computers I haven't been able to figure out. I suspect our systems log all of our activities and upload the info into apple servers online. From there who knows who can see the data, how it's stored, how much they know about us etc. I really wouldn't bother clearing out the extra caches, focus on erasing evidence on hand that could be used in court and fuck the rest. Dban the hard disk in a windows pc and from there boot into recovery mode via cmnd-r and use disk utility (it's one of the tools you can use there) or boot into the snow leopard dvd if you have one, reformat back to guid and your as good as is practical or convenient.

Well that's just illogical because formatting < zero-filling < ATA Secure Erase commands. DU doesn't wipe a disk. You can walk through a drive with MHDD and see even the difference between Secure Erase and Secure Erase (Enhanced).
Of course, Apple won't comment on why partitioning a drive for Lion installation with sgdisk or gdisk, ostensibly identically to diskutil's specs, isn't acceptable to InstallESD.dmg - I have a pretty good idea, you'd have to do an extended scan on your drive with TestDisk to see the corruption Disk Utility throws into the 'proprietary' formula, for free!

At 37,000 feet, with not a flicker of wireless being picked up, I changed the hard drive to the new SSD, inserted a Genuine Windows 7 Professional disc (pressed by Microsoft Singapore - $200 or so), and installed Windows.

Parted Magic DBAN works, but then DBAN is a piece of shit because - well - read their FAQ. They lie in their test results. They say they've wiped the drive. They don't even fucking wipe the HPA. Also, they take fucking 11 hours to fail to do what INTEL's SSD instructions (ATA Secure Erase commands) do in under 2 minutes. ATA Secure Erase commands will wipe your drive. But I've bought a few hundred TOO MANY NEW DRIVES to be talking seriously about wiping drives without sounding like a nigger African warlord with a pea for a brain.

They delete every thread where I even mention the language packs forced onto the entire world (Microsoft is doing it too, at least in the EFI / System / MSR boot partitions). No one has answers. I wouldn't use a usb or dvd off the shelf virgin ever, I buy my usb's and format them GUID with disk utility and then, from the command line, write a 3 pass wipe of random data to the entire hard drive of the usb. Never just write zero's hell that's what "they" expect us to do if we're being careful. Random data is close to foolproof I think. From there it's sanitized so says I and good to rock and roll. Otherwise who knows what's lurking around in there...Sony taught us that lesson well... I fought for control over my machine for 5 months before getting her back 100% under my control. We have to be cautious...

Well couple things. First I agree with you that disk utility is useless for erasing or secure erasing anything. In fact, I said as much in my post...
Second to test the theory and because you inspired me, I ran testdisk in fact and it found after running nearly 9 freaking hours) several thousand files for me. Oddly enough through there is is so much corruption all I can really use are lines of text, nothing else seems legitimate. Some of the smaller pictures like a safari icon for example, but nothing else. I'm sure a good compiler can make use of quite a few but I have no idea where to find much less use a compiler. Over 30 files of varying type well over a gig in size which I found strange. It delivered a 30gig address book file for example, several 2gig text documents and just THOUSANDS of weird random things. None of it useful. I had run a 3 wipe pass with disk utility on the hard drive not long ago, few months perhaps, and I have to say it's completely useless. Some of the data I found goes back to when I first got my laptop and was very recoverable despite my having used disk utility and a variety of other erasers in the past. I haven't dbanned the HD yet, though that is my next move, for for curiosity's sake more than anything else. I love proving corporations wrong and expose willful deceipt. Telling folks that buy your machines that a program does something as crucial as wiping data when, in fact, it does not is unconscionable.

See this is more in line with what I thought I was talking about, the saving of data the why the where the how much etc. I want answers to those questions. For example, my mbp came with a variety of scripts which were/are "proprietary" and "maintained by Apple" and they expressly prohibit you from editing them. 1- No it's ROM, not video bios
2- I was not talking about the Lion recovery gay partition that every sane person deletes after installing Lion (though close to it). It is in fact called "INTERNET RECOVERY". You cannot reach it while a functioning Lion recovery partition is alive. You have to delete the Lion recovery partition /dev/disk0s3 to get the cmnd R to produce Internet Recovery. When you boot into that it looks very similar to Lion recovery minus a couple utilities and I can assure you, it is a separate disk from your hard drive but contained somewhere in the machine. not sure where. I can take a screen shot if you do not believe me but it's certainly there. When booted into it my <diskutil list> output shows me that /dev/disk0 is my hard drive and /dev/disk1 is this file system, specifically /dev/disk1s3 which is "Mac OSX Base System" and no nothing will delete it.
3-Last night- just LAST NIGHT if you can believe it- my friend who taught me damn near everything important I have ever learned tells me while on this topic for discussion "wait- I just realized you never once mentioned getting a new hard drive. You know they're like $50-100 right? I assumed you had some attachment to the old one but all the trouble to keep it healthy is pointless- just buy a new one". I was floored. Scuter having done some research I am fairly sure the "Mac OSX Base System" is in fact a HPA on the hard drive. Not sure if that would classify it as ROM or not, I don't know really, but it's very similar. It does exist and while I can not modify it SOMEONE DOES as I have an old image i took months ago and when compared to now there are numerous files having been moved or erased and a bunch added. And this is a "read only" system mind you, it's impossible to change anything.
