About Rena:

In this series of self-portraits I explore issues of identity and the loss of it through censorship and self-censorship, consumerism and commodification. A battle is played out between who we think we are, who we would like to be, and who we think others want us to be. There is a slightly surreal flavour to them, with a play of inner turmoil and a looming uncertainty of reality and how we perceive it.

We spend our lives trying to understand those closest to us, but how realistic is this achievement when we are such complex and ever changing beings? How much of ourselves is unknowingly controlled by the opportunities in our surroundings, and the expectations and constraints of social norms?
