"interesting. so psychopaths are out of control, sociopaths just leeches?"
psychopaths are definitely out of control, sociopaths are a bit harder to define.. they are kind of like automatonic reptiles wandering around wearing human masks, programmed by themselves to be as polite and unobtrusive as possible.
that said i mean, "sociopath" is a lot like "schizophrenic" in terms of brands; its an unbelievably robust landscape of symptoms and manifestations and there are huge swaths of humanity that are could be clinically defined as either but never are because they never run afoul of Those Who Can Mandate Psychoanalysis.
like, if you google sociopath, youll see that 90% of all the pop articles are just describing Ted Bundy's personality.
dig a bit deeper and suddenly youre in the middle of the whole 'anti social personality' realm of disorders, and the lack of moral imperatives that define the typical sociopath compose a fraction of the general spectrum of familiar villain prototrends:
(From wikipedia)
Theodore Millon's subtypes
Theodore Millon identified five subtypes of Anti-Social Personality Disorder.[7][8] exhibiting all of the following:
covetous antisocial – variant of the pure pattern where individuals feel that life has not given them their due.
reputation-defending antisocial – including narcissistic features
risk-taking antisocial – including histrionic features
nomadic antisocial – including schizoid, avoidant features
malevolent antisocial – including sadistic, paranoid features.
its almost as if no one wants to define pure sociopathology in its moral deficit incarnation because its simply too horrifying. everything has to be mocked up in these exceedingly accessible concepts.
which of those describes the church going family man in alaska who used to kidnap whores, then set them free in the woods and hunt them down with a deer rifle?
my point being, psychopathology is actually very easy to point a finger at and say 'yes, this matches the description'.
sociopaths, real sociopaths, are something like those spiders that cover their bodies with dead ants so they can sneak further into the ant nest unmollested. how does an ant describe that spider in ant terms? whats the ant perspective on that? is some ant Sarah McLachlan going to croon about the plight of The Eaten during ant commercials? no, because the reality of the spider simply doesnt compute.
i feel thats really how the general public approaches sociopaths. the reality is so alien that it simply gets ignored in favor of disorders we have a vocabulary prepared to define.
