Shea butter is one of my favorite hair products/ingredients. While it's perfectly fine to use it straight from the container, I like whipping mine as it makes it easier to get out of the jar. A reader recently asked me how to know when a product is a "deep" conditioner and not just a regular rinse-out conditioner. She asked this because many intensive conditioning treatments don't list themselves that way. Great question! And here's where some legwork on your part comes in.

Sometimes, you'll have to read the instructions to see how to use it. If it instructs you to:

Apply after shampooing and towel drying
Leave on for at least 10 minutes (sometimes as little as five) and up to an hour or so
Use with or without heat
Use with or without a plastic cap

Then chances are it's a deep conditioner, designed to impart more moisture into your hair. It's good practice to use one on a regular basis, at least once a month, but with most black hair, a minimum of twice per month is a better option.
