because thats not something a functional adult mind would trot out for peer review, so a lot of us are confused.

Not in terms of ridiculous to believe, but the sheer number of people who are throwing reason to the wind and blindly believing every ridiculous story about Trump these days definitely outweighs that. The whole birther thing was mainly a fringe belief whereas this kind of thing is everyday through virtually every information outlet possible.
