Criminals wielding ?angle grinders? have chopped down lampposts across Retford.

Several have been targeted in a bizarre crime spree, which was first reported on Thursday, November 28.

Three lampposts were cut down within 50 yards of each other near Morrisons footbridge.

Each had been cut in a straight line across the base of the post and the wires inside were left intact, leading many to say they were using tools such as an angle grinder.

Another lamppost and a tree were cut at the back of Jewson Builders Merchant and the fire station on the tow path.

Tony McManus, who discovered three of the lampposts while out jogging, said: "I was out running and encountered them between the footbridge and Morrisons, I think it was about 9.30pm.

"People are saying that it's not for scrap, it could have been for the lights because the wire were not cut.

"I would say it was for vandalism. Surely someone would have heard something.

"One person on Facebook suggested there was nothing doing at 7.30pm so it must have been within those two hours.

"They have since been made safe and there is tape around them."

Residents took to social media to voice their outrage.

One said: "Definitely been cut. World's gone bloody mad."

Another said: "It wasn't like that when I walk

And another said: "Definitely been cut. Probably with a battery angle grinder."

A resident said: "Horrendous they have no respect."

Another said: "Are they possibly made of any valuable materials that someone tried to steal? Or could it just be the case of unprovoked vandalism?"

A social media user said: "Been cut. Probably intend to come back with transport and steal them."

Lincolnshire Live asked Nottinghamshire Police for a comment but they had not responded by the time of publication.
