I am genuinely curious about your request and happen to have a friend who is a platform developer for google. I sent him an email regarding the developer switch and inquired about potentialy porting it over to a mac air, here is my question/his response.

Can something similar be had for say a macbook air perchance? I am guessing it's only going to be found on Chromebooks but I thought I'd ask anyway.

It is a chrome book specific feature yes. In developer mode you have full access to the OS (not just the boot) and boot loader. In regular mode it secures the system from physical access by anyone but an account holder or guest. Switching between the two wipes out all user data.
I'm actually not sure if there is something similar for Mac, I've never tried to install anything but macos on one. However I don't think it would be the form of a switch.
Reason I pm'd you- I am not 100% sure what functionality it is that you desire and I am bad at second guessing. If you could be more specific, IE You want <this>, specifically, I can ask and see what might resolve your concerns.
My best GUESS at this point is that you feel the systems you are purchasing are corrupted in some way which makes you uneasy, you feel as if it's not 100% YOUR machine, with full transparency. In riding that hunch I already asked steven the following:
1. Chrome OS can be compiled and installed on another machine yes? I haven't tried but I believe it can be. Is developer mode specific ONLY to Chrome Books or is it functional with ChromeOS in general?
1b. Presuming developer mode can be used with any installation of chromeoS, it would be really simple I would think to simply dual-boot the mac-air right?
2. Do you have any technical physical knowledge of the switch itself? The hardware I mean. My interest is basically can it be replicated on a mac air?
