Of course God is a construct of man. God is beyond our human understanding and the only way we can interact with Him is to create a framework of religion to use as an operating system. That doesn't mean that He doesn't exist or that it's not essential to have Him in our lives. It's usually easiest to worship in the traditions taught to us by our parents, but if that's not working out anybody is free to try out other religions where the God construct and the methods of interaction may be more suitable for their needs.
